Is it really helpful or sensible for Pres. Biden to declare (as he did 13 July) that Evan is 'illegally detained'? An American citizen in Russia is subject to Russian laws and Russian courts, not American ones – Evan has a Russian defence counsel and has made several appearances in Russian courts. So, what's 'illegal'. here? Americans, not even American presidents don't get to control the criminal justice systems of other sovereign nations – of which Russia is most certainly one. Not only will Biden's actions piss off the Russian courts and the Russian people (and thus probably potentially increase any sentence Evan might receive), every Russian, Mexican, Colombian, Chinese detained or incarcerated in the US will claim to be 'illegally detained'. American seems increasingly tone-deaf about relationships with the rest of the world.
Maybe Americans should follow the governments advice and leave Russia? Just a thought.
His best bet for freedom is to lecture the Russians about gender diversity and inclusion. Once they learn how to be more equitable, they'll surely let him go.
