A New Zealand tourist described the moment an American soldier ran across the heavily fortified South Korean border into North Korea. Tourist Sarah Leslie said she was on a day tour in the Joint Security Area when Private 2nd Class Travis King bolted into North Korea.

Having served in Korea back in ‘97 I’ll say he should’ve known better!!!!! As soon as the plane lands military officials board the plan and brief all soldiers on do’s and dont’s. Civilians should never be allowed to tour one of the world’s Most Dangerous war zones. I had an opportunity to fly the dmz also and it’s no game hopefully he can be released but the chances are slim to none!!!!! I sincerely hope he’s still alive
Most folks want to come South, not North. It is a forbidding place and when I was stationed there we always talked about defectors from the North and how we could not help, no one ever thought about heading north of the 38th parallel.

The fact is, he’s not the first soldier to defect to North Korea if that is indeed what he has done. Once they got there, they were treated great because they are used as propaganda tools to tell the citizens of North Korea. Just how lucky they are, and how evil the outside world is and how evil America is, etc. In fact, the soldiers were given homes and wives And they lived a pretty good life there

Maybe thought he was going to be court-martialed input in military prison but the thing is even if that's the case I would rather be in prison in my home country then in North Korea they treat girl people horrible just imagine how they're going to treat him. It may be surprising to most, but this black service member may might have been wronged by the military and s Korean system. Coming back home to face more abuse as a black man? Knowing that we are most often denied true , equal justice.

So many things don’t sit right about this situation. I understand the back story: he was a young troublemaker in South Korea, if you were ever stationed there then you would know that those soldiers get into fights. He was enroute back to US for disciplinary reasons.
1. How did he successfully evade the guards escorting him?
2. How did he get into a tour that required passports and paperwork, surely his guards had those and he wouldn’t have those on his person?
3. What caused the trouble in SK? Was he a North Korean sympathizer?
4. The soldiers on the border debriefed the witnesses and some of their stories did not match what was debriefed to them. Some heard the laugh, others did not. Some saw him run and others did not. He purchased a hat from the gift shop? Why did he have money or his wallet on him? Isn’t there procedure against that for detainees being transported?
There’s a number of things unsettling about this case.
He thought the white people mistreated him. We'll see how he feels when and if he gets back to the USA.

This kid was set to be disciplined the next day in the US for assaulting a Korean in South Korea, not sure if it was a woman or man, and destroying a Police car. Either he was going AWOL, running from his problems and decided North Korea was a great option (CRAZY)… or he has serious mental health issues.. He planned this obviously. Maybe that's where he wants to be, looks like it to me… They will not be letting him go anytime soon….
