Why on earth did he abandon his dog his companion after all these months at sea. That dog will never understand why he was left. Loyalty to its owner would have lasted forever. Shame on you for whatever reason you have given. 😢
I had a cat that I rescued and gave him away to one of my neighbors, it's not that I didn't want the cat but I also saw that my neighbors were better suited to take care of him. Maybe that's why he let Bella go.
The only place I would go without BEAUTIFUL BELLA is the bathroom and even then I would leave the door open. I wouldn't PART with her for not even a second.

That dog was his guardian angel. She was there for him for support and morale to get him through this difficult experience. Sometimes animals come into your life to help you with something.
I'm also surprised he's not keeping her, initially the news story makes it seem like she's already his dog. Meanwhile, the fisherman crew guy is like "hey we rescued a random dude at sea and I won a free dog!" Lol imagine telling people in future where he got his dog from!

Well to the people complaining about him not keeping the dog, When tragedy struck, maybe he felt a huge guilt about putting the dog in those circumstances by taking him aboard. I think it would even pass through my mind.
He wasn't prepared, they need to quad redundancies and variations that are not loseable, it's not about "boating".

Edit: Also if you're not exactly sure how dogs are in Mexico. I had a cousin who had worked on a farm in Mexico and he had to put strays down that got onto their farmland. I say she got a very good outcome
