Such epedemics come in waves, but waves are made by a set of smaller waves, especially if we take counter measures such as temporary lock downs that do not last until the epedemic is over.
Corona showed a strong ability to mutate. In the first wave, that came in four to five sub-waves depending on the region, and will again come as a new variant.
It is is possible that this time in a new wave the Virus even further mutatet.
Considering that no other naturally spreading and known Virus, such as the flue or HIV, mutate on that rapid levels, it might be helpful if the research of the CIA on gain of function is made availabe as open source in all detail.
The first wave was about 1 percent leathel.
