The Sinaloa Cartel is behind this, not some average Joe who didn't like him. They control the prisons through one of their gang arms, "Los Choneros" and have been behind waves of violence in recent weeks due to Ecuador's strategic Position next to Colombia and Peru, two cocaine producing countries. Throw in the USD as the currency and a presidential candidate declaring war on this and you'll have a bloodbath.
I fear this will happen to Trump – there are people who said they will stop at nothing to make sure he is not elected.

If you want to know a little about the context . Fernando Villavicencio was a politician, activist and journalist. This past years he investigated , found out and reported publicly many corruption cases (drug trafficking, politicians and journalists deads, money laundry, etc. ) which took place during Rafael Correa’s government (socialist).
During this past years Fernando denounced multiple times that he received threats by ex president Rafael Correa , his allies and also by drug traffickers. Tonight he was shot approximately 15 times by three people. Bullets hit his head. One of the hitmen got arrested but suspiciously died.
Basically , Ecuador is under corruption and narco control.
