I’ve watched 6 videos and read a NYT’s article and no representation of native Hawaiians anywhere. Why?
My heart goes out to anyone who lost their lives. This is so sad. With that said, native Hawaiians have been protesting the big resorts and developers taking their water leaving them with nothing. There are a bunch of native Hawaiians living in poverty or flat out homeless encampments. No mention of that anywhere. The news keeps largely showing just white residents. And you know what? I have spent a lot of time with surfer/nature type white people and I’m sure the ones in Hawaii are great people unlike their counterparts who are developers, mansion owners and resort types destroying the home and lives of native Hawaiians. Yet the person in me who comes from a family from the fellow colonized by the USA island of Puerto Rico, can’t help but notice the lack of coverage on native Hawaiians….. do they not also live/work/exist there or what? Further, I think it says a lot that the two islands, with extremely similar histories and similarities, have experienced some of the worst disasters in the past 5 years.

I grew up on the Big Island where we always had a problem with wildfires in drought periods.
There are 2 sides to these islands, the windward (NE) and leeward (SW). Windward is the side that faces the trade winds blowing in from the ocean. These moist winds get trapped by the mountains, causing that side to receive a large amount of rainfall while the leeward side gets much much less, especially when there's little variation in the wind pattern. The leeward side is largely dry grassland and scrub bushes. You can actually see where the clouds typically move around the islands from satellite maps, the green areas follow the movement of rain clouds around the mountains (green areas in the SW are from the clouds being pushed around the mountain by trade winds as they shift during the day/seasons and the taller peaks are mostly barren due to being higher than the rain cloud level).
Now if you look at Maui, you can see that these wildfires are occurring in obvious dry areas. On the Big Island buildings are more at risk from lava (in the active area to the SE at least) than wildfires because
1. There's little development in the dry grassland areas (mostly owned by ranches)
2. The areas that are developed in dry areas are mostly surrounded by lava fields with very sparse vegetation, which prevents runaway wildfires (it's the newest island so the lava fields have had less time to be broken down into soil).
Those developments on Maui have always been a ticking time bomb.
This is proof the government will not rescue you people need to prep and be prepared for any disaster
