I dunno why that man who resigned did or why he made the call but it certainly wasn't just his call and he probably lost friends and family, also, and is grieving, like everyone on the island and those that care about what happened. I'm sorry for your loss and hope your feeling will feel better someday and that you and your families will be ok and have food and shelter and love and everything you need because you have ALL been through something horrible and it makes me very sad for you. The internet is full of Native Hawaiians begging tourists not to come because of the strain on their natural resources & cultural erasure; and MSNBC choosing to throw in a random guy saying "but it's okay if you guys still visit" on the tail-end of a disaster is disgusting. Someone who is self-interested, that directly benefits from the exploitation of their people so that mainlanders can feel better about their decisions to still vacation amidst an island wide emergency. I lived in Hawaii in the 1960's and at that time on Oahu sirens meant head up the mountain a tsunami might be coming. I needed to respond to it only once and waited in the Mormon Temple lot until the warning was over. I don't know what we would have thought if we smelled smoke at the same time as the warning came. Might have thought there were two problems. Fire and water both deadly if you live on the coast, but at that time the north shore of Oahu didn't have a fire problem like much of Maui has at this time.

I watched the interview with that director of Emergency services on Maui. I almost jumped through the television at him. You chose to not use the warning system because it was designed for Tsunamis only??? Really? So instead you sealed the Fate of these poor Peoples lives by giving them no Warning whatsoever. Most had no idea until the flames were down upon them. Surely to Goodness, any warning is better than no warning at all. This is beyond belief. I certainly hope there is a mass Class action against the emergency authorities and in turn the State Government foe allowing this decision which resulted in so many Deaths & injuries.
It's funny, school's are required to have fire drills. But adults don't mind not having any alarm at all for a town because they think people will run into fire?

The fires have happened but there are still hundreds of people missing……FYI the few locals with Starlink all say that there is no electrcity, mobile phone reception or internet in WEST MAUI so these people may be alive but they can't contact anyone to tell them they are alive…….Perhaps there would be less people on the missing person database if their intenet was working so they could contacts others to tell them they are safe. These fires happened over a week ago……common get your internet service working.
It's so condescending to say that people would have walked into the fire. Moreover, if he himself knew of the danger and could bring or keep his own family in safety/safe, the people have the fundamental right to know of the approaching danger too

People always have to point the finger at someone. A lot of people know about fires, and choose not to evacuate as well. It's an island, there's no where to go, any disaster on Hawaii ends like this, with nowhere to go but the ocean, in cases of fires. there was traffic everywhere…People in the news are even shown not evacuating and trying to fight the fires themselves. During every tsunami alert, there was complete chaos, just lines of cars out of gas stations, and grocery stores jam packed, people on Islands panic. It's a real tragedy, the loss of so many lives. I don't think that the sirens would've helped that many more of the people who died.
