Trevor Reed, a former U.S. Marine who spent nearly three years in a Russian prison before being freed in an inmate swap, was wounded while fighting in Ukraine, the State Department said Tuesday.
Department spokesman Vedant Patel said Reed was transported to Germany for medical care by a non-governmental organization and was not “engaged in any activities on behalf of the U.S. government,” likely indicating he was a volunteer fighter.
