if he did reach for the door at a house he had never been to previously and while not recognizing the person inside, that's pretty stupid on his part…not saying he deserved to be shot, but it definitely changes the analysis of a reasonable homeowner might think in that situation.

Wild to see so many trying to break down Ralph’s defence by noting that he didn’t mention reaching for the door initially. I am currently working in an ER trauma unit, and I can guarantee that if any of you were shot in your frontal lobe (memory and decision making Center) and arm, and were on very high doses of analgesia (a lot of which have sedative effects) while bleeding out and being questioned by police during all the chaos, you would not be able to report every single detail of a preceding interaction accurately. Ralph likely took time after being shot in the head to recover and reflect on the interaction to remember all of the details. And if Lester’s defends team thinks this minute detail is a concern, then how about Lester (who was not actively bleeding from his head during initial police interviews 🙄) claiming he saw a “6-foot tall Black man” when Ralph is a 5’8” Black boy who is barely 140 lbs?? Cause with that same logic of the lawyer, then Lester was also lying 🙄🙄🙄. If people just want to defend a racist old man’s reaction, then just do it without all the pitiful attempts at masking your racism smh!

If the door is locked and the person is unarmed you have no right to lethal force. Only after multiple attempts at entry and after verbal warnings to stop, would warrant cause for the fear, of loss of life. standing outside, reaching for the door does NOT meet this standard. Undercover law enforcement can legally come onto your property to question you and they will not identify themselves until they have knocked.

Tough case, i hope the young man recovers fully and quickly. At the same time an old man has the right to not let anyone try to come in his home. Hopefully a jury comes to the correct conclusion.
