I understand there is a drought, but why does the lifting and lowering the ship cost 55 million gallons of water from the lake? Seems that they need to rework the plumbing of the locks to take from the ocean and add that amount to the lake. May involve more pumps and power and pumping but seems viable.

Slow down with the fear mongering. They can take the long way around the tip of Chile/Argentina, like before the canal. It adds 2 weeks to the trip so fuel, labor, maintenance and wear and tear does add a substantial cost. Yes, it will add to the consumer price. Your coverage seems to want to scare the consumer into thinking the circumstances are doom and gloom.
