The Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted on Sunday afternoon with flows currently confined to the surrounding crater floor, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The big Island of Hawaii geologically is the youngest island in the archipelago and is still forming. In the spring of 1983, I was living in a subdivision near the tiny town of Pahoa. On a ridge 4 miles away, I saw Kilouea open up one rainy night. It sent up a 1500 ft lava fountain that illuminated the rainclouds. I could even hear the sound of the molten rock spattering on the ground as it sent a river of lava towards the town of Kalapana. It was a spectacle!
