I understand that security cameras are an unfortunate necessity these days, but I'll say this: when I go out to eat, it's for a special occasion. If the restaurant can't show me the most basic level of respect of assuming that I'm a paying customer, I don't want to eat there. There's already a significant amount of trust that has to be given when going to a restaurant that the chef is going to prepare your food safely and to your liking. No one wants to get food poisoning, for example, but I don't go in and demand to inspect the kitchen before I eat, because I respect the restaurant to uphold it's part of the transaction, just as I will uphold mine.
If you treat me like a criminal, if I feel like I'm being surveilled like some sort of FBI creep sitting in an unmarked van, I'm not eating at your restaurant. Again, I recognize business realities. But it's also a really good indicator that your restaurant is for a clientele I don't often want to share a meal with. If I want that experience, I can go to McDonald's or KFC or the local all-you-can-eat.
Just lock the door…have a bouncer. …or pay before eating
Restaurants should charge when people order. That would stop it.
