No Mister Anchorman – Biden joked that he didn't walk into the press conference not wearing a mask. There is no suggestion he isn't wearing a mask. Trouble maker…the press just disappoints constantly. I guess you really don't get how a virus works. The need a living host – just like the press. Both fighting like hell to survive.
A type of gain of function research is called animal passaging. Researchers inject a virus into mice. The virus then undergoes slight mutations as it passes through several generations of mice. The scientists then select the strongest (or weakest) mutations in each generation and passes that virus to the next generation until the virus becomes more or less deadly whichever the lab is trying to produce. And because of anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers that is exactly what was going on in our city streets right now. As we pass the virus among ourselves the virus mutates and can become not only more transmissible but more or less deadly.
Going from the Alpha virus to the Omicrone virus exemplified how the virus was and is mutating in the human population. The Delta virus was 40% more transmissible and more deadly than the Alpha virus. Anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers ranted about Fauci and GOF research when they themselves were actually forcing GOF techniques on the population by refusing to wear masks and getting vaccinated. Then came the omicron (B.1.1.529) variant and it was at lease 8 times more transmissible than Delta. We were so lucky that omicron was less deadly. But scientists also use similar methods to develop weakened virus vaccines. If Omicron had been even weaker it could have served as a weaken virus vaccine. If that had been the case the CDC might have fallen all over themselves to beg people to quit wearing masks and spread that virus as much as possible. But that was not the case and antivaxxers and anti-maskers were playing Russian roulette with America's wealth and its people. The point is that Republicans are such ignorant hypocrites to say one word about China or Fauci when they themselves were forcing GOF type methods on America as a whole.
As the new vaccine to be released mid September of 2023 will target COVID variants (XBB.1.5), (XBB.1.16), (EG.5.1), (FL.1.5.1) and (BA.2.86) there is even a new variant (VA.2.86) which is giving the medical community concerns. What we are experiencing is a gain of function technique being carried out on our city streets right now. This GOF technique can be attributed to the MAGA cult AKA the Typhoid Mary Cult. The Typhoid Mary Cult has kept COVID alive and well. But this method of GOF technique is not controlled and it can produce very mild variants with low R naughts or it can produce very deadly variants with high R naughts. The Trump Typhoid Mary Cult should congratulate themselves for the 14 trillion dollar cost to our economy..
Fauci needs to be held accountable. Funded research that lead to a pandemic, lied about the pandemic, then made decisions that lined his pockets. Its pretty clear what the punishment should be.

I see Republicans parroting misinformation about vaccines, masks and social distancing. What I don't see are Republicans promoting self-reliance. Republicans are slow to take vaccines and they hate wearing masks but they are real quick to run to hospitals when they get sick. But who covers the cost of these huge hospital bills? Much of the costs are paid by ratepayers and taxpayers. Twenty years ago Republicans would have been arguing that irresponsible people who refuse masks and vaccines and then wind up in hospitals should be self-reliant and paying for their own treatments through payment plans and higher insurance rates for COVID riders. Twenty years ago Republicans would have been arguing that it's wrong for governments and ratepayers to pay any costs for the treatment of those who not only refuse to help solve cataclysmic problems but instead contribute to the problems. But today's Republicans are shameless moochers. They love getting welfare and they depend on the welfare provided by ratepayers and taxpayers. The Republican hatred of masks and vaccines is overshadowed only by their love for socialism.

Looking at whether people who wear masks have a lower rate of infection vs. unmasked people is useless since the main point of masking is to reduce the ability of infected people to infect others. If you have on a mask in a room full of infected people, it's not going to do much to protect you. This is why all these mask studies are fundamentally flawed and don't prove anything useful. They would have to have an isolated population of people who all wear masks and an isolated population of people who never wear masks and study their infection rates over a substantial time period. This was never done. It is clear, however, that a proper mask will reduce how much virus an infected person emits and how far it travels. It is also known that if and how severely you get infected depends on how much virus you are exposed to. That's why masks work. It's not that difficult to understand and it's not a political statement.

Before I start you need to be made aware of two important terms. Contraction means (to get, to acquire, to come down with, to develop, to catch) a disease. Transmission means (to give, to pass on, to spread, to relay) a disease. So if you are well and you catch a disease you are contracting the disease. But if you are sick and you are spreading the disease then you are transmitting the disease.
The most important function of masks are to protect society from the individuals who are wearing the masks. Masks are better suited for preventing the transmission of COVID and less suited for preventing the contraction of COVID. This was one of the very first comments Fauci made about masks after the outbreak of COVID. That was one of the first distortions the right wing and Russian trolls created about Fauci and masks. When there were about 500 people in the US who were infected and about 15 people dead from COVID Fauci said that in an outbreak you don't put masks on 300 million people. He said masks work best on the people who are infected and then on first responders, medical workers and others who work closely with vulnerable people like nursing home attendants. Fauci explained that mask are suited best as cough and sneeze suppressors. Fauci said that masks are better suited for stopping the transmission of COVID but they are less effective at stopping the contraction of COVID.
In saying that Fauci made it perfectly clear that the primary function of masks was to protect the general public from those who have COVID and form those who are likely to get COVID. Fauci said that we had a shortage of masks and that we need to make sure that the primary function is observed. Then when COVID started spreading at an exponential rate and it became known that COVID was asymptomatic that became a game changer. Fauci then said that we need to get as many masks out there as possible. Fauci was acknowledging that all of a sudden it's possible that anyone can be carriers of COVID and now it was best to mask as many people as possible. And that is when the right wing started saying that Fauci was a liar and that he said that masks are not that effective in preventing the contraction of COVID and now he's telling everyone to mask up. But that in no way made Fauci a liar. The conditions had changed. The average person went from being someone who we could tell was infected by taking their temperature to unknown carriers of COVID. Suddenly masks were important at prevent the transmission of COVID for everyone. Before it was known that COVID was asymptomatic the medical community knew exactly who should be wearing masks; people who were medical workers, first responders, people who were sick with COVID and people with 101 or greater temperatures. Those were the only people who it was believed that could transmit COVID. But after the asymptomatic wake up call suddenly anyone was a potential carrier and anyone could transmit COVID.
At that point it became important to develop a test so that carriers could be identified and self quarantined and masked when around others. At that point it became important to the Russians to keep people misled and the Russian trolls kept pushing the point that masks were made primarily for preventing the contraction of COVID and not preventing the transmission of COVID. And that is the reason everyone is so ignorant about masks.
