To put this flood's death toll into perspective, consider the Johnstown Flood in Pennsylvania on May 31, 1889. That flood's death toll was 2,208, a total dwarfed by the number of dead in this catastrophe (latest figure: 11,300+). The amount of water released in the torrents that tore through Johnstown and Derna were different, though. In Johnstown it was roughly 14,550,000 m³, whereas in Derna it was roughly 30,000,000 m³ (and in each case, those same figures represent the torrent's mass in metric tons, of course). So, the amount of water in the Libyan city was more than twice what swept through the town in Pennsylvania, but the outcome was well over twice as bad. Derna truly is a disaster that will not soon be forgotten. I hope that some good can come out of it — like perhaps more unity and stability in Libya. It could use some.
