In 1789 the US still couldn't really maintain a significant standing army and it really was vital to the national defense to not allow any of the state governors to pass a law that would disarm the minutemen (the "well regulated militia" that the 2nd Amendment was talking about). Today, not so much. Two guys bringing completely unnecessary guns to a football practice OTOH has nothing to do with the national defense and I don't know why the 2nd amendment protects them.

If guns are for self defense of your home and family, surely the open carry or concealed carry is going beyond the original Constitutional meaning of the second amendment. Legally bought guns, and those for hunting and protecting home seem reasonable to me even though I abhor them and would never want one. Living a peaceful life helps not needing one.
