Crew and passengers on a JetBlue flight extinguished a backpack fire that was ignited by a lithium-ion battery as passengers were still boarding. The FAA has reported that as of early October, there have been 60 on-board incidents involving the batteries. NBC News’ Tom Costello has more.

Lithium batteries will eventually be replaced by new technology by 2030.
After deliberately destroying several 18650 cells (far away from any buildings or other people etc), I can attest to how quickly these cells can go up in flame. Simply piercing the cell, or squashing it can easily result in an extremely violent fire that is both difficult to extinguish, as well as the risk of a later flare up, in some cases, days later (if it's a big battery like in an EV).
Solution: LiFePO4. Although these cells have about 1/3 less energy density than the common "dangerous" cells, they are an extremely inert chemistry, relative to the other consumer-level chemistries available.
simple solution, forbid everyone to charge to their portable battery during flight
All the exploding batteries are Made in China with fake temperature controllers that does not regulate heat. Buy at your own risk!!!
Cellphones should be kept in a fireproof safe somewhere safe and handed back out after flight.

And this is why you are not allowed to have lithium batteries in the cargo hold. When I was working with the airlines, we would take your items out and have you claim them. Because if your item causes any problems you can be charged for it. You can even be charged for having a destructive item in the cargo hold.
So why doesn't TSA do anything? Because the TSA is lazy. They are required to take it out and have you claim it. Lithium battery devices are banned in ALL Cargo holds unless in a special container that can prevent a fire. This is under FAA and NTSB flight rules. If only TSA would actually do their jobs.
This is weird so for a few decade we been boarding planes trains buses with them and non of this ever happened back in the days unless you had a knock off brand from china but now currently this year all of them are exploding even if it’s not a knock off ? Did they sign contracts to the wrong company for a budget cut or something ?
If they knew lithium was in those devices why would they allow it?

So does the FAA really think because they say lithium-ion batteries are not allowed in checked baggage that people don't pack those batteries in their checked luggage? Unless every single checked piece of luggage is opened and inspected before it is loaded onto the plane, lithium-ion batteries are in checked baggage in the belly of the plane.
