What inspired me to serve? It was 1984. In Spokane Washington, minimum wage was 3.10 an hour. 50 hour weeks sometimes at the local Taco Bell.
Not quite enough to live on. So, 20 to 30 hour weeks doing banquet set up for the Sheraton Hotel down town….from 3am to 10ish some days.
The Marines were looking like a pretty good option for survival. My dad made sure I understood my survival was totally up to me. He changed the locks in the house 6 months after I graduated high school…just like he said he would.
It's really why most enlisted guys signed up back then.
