Inside Amazon’s robot revolution

Amazon is investing a billion dollars in new industrial technology, including Digit, a robot working in their Seattle Robotics Research and Development facility. Amazon says the robots will be used to support human employees, but labor experts and Amazon warehouse employees say they are concerned about the future of human work.

UPDATE: This story’s headline and description have been updated to include Amazon’s statement that its robots are meant to support human employees, not replace them.

  1. Yeah humans better find something to do….art? Theater? Entertainment? Food? Warehouse work sucks anyway

  2. A lot of employees need to be retrained to do other jobs. Humans are very much capable of learning and changing, it's not easy if you've been a factory worker all your life but it's certainly doable. Humanity needs to let robots do the monotonous tasks and we can do the creative tasks.

  3. I wonder which TERMINATOR movie will we all be starring in? ohhh….wait were all EXTRAS! 🤣

  4. It’s crazy cuz it’s gonna take everyone’s job.

  5. We need to move away from the idea that a person's worth is a financial calculation.

  6. Those bot will be heading to California first. They don't need sick pay. No, time and a half and no union votes. By more shares of AMZN.

  7. tesla's optimus robot is going to be the gold standard

  8. Skynet became self aware at 2:14 am Eastern Time on August 29th 1997… just sayin.

  9. More reliable than humans. No drama. If only they could replace congress with robots.

  10. "We have an out of control robot on the east side of the building!"
    "He's shooting in all directions!"
    "Well, shut him down."
"We can't! Someone has to press the red button on the back!"
    😂

  11. Next thing you know judgment day and the robots rebell.

  12. This is leading into a dangerous future now

  13. You ever think if AI does take over Humanity and Humanity goes extinct, the AI would wonder what is their purpose? And why they were created?

  14. Welp, there goes the jobs and more people on the streets because i doubt everyone would become a robot engineer.

  15. The dull, dirty and dangerous jobs humans find soul crushing are ideal for robots. One cannot have it both ways. One thing nations can do is STOP IMPORTING POOR PEOPLE WITH NO SKILLS. It is not the task of the first world to employ everyone else. They need to sort out their OWN societies.

  16. Japans already did it … I mean cmon already . Japan 🇯🇵

  17. if you are going to push the corporate dystopia of sci-fi novels, you better push UBI lobying too if you expect the all the humans to shut up and take it.

  18. Well this will create domestic terrorist to use electromagnetic pulse weapons in the future.

  19. I urge everybody to read about and understand socialism. Technically is leading us past the point in history where capitalism is required to move society forward. We are entering a new epoch. We must prepare ourselves.

  20. Fear not warehouse workers, Sarah Connor is coming for them. Your jobs are safe!

  21. Goverment will have to step in and do something. If they don't, I would be more worried about a human uprising then a robot one. In the world of haves and have-nots. There are a lot more have-nots.

  22. when greed does bad, it must be taken out.

  23. If no one has a job, then no one will buy anything,, Idiots

  24. Keep asking for 20 an hour for an entry level job !! You’re getting replaced!!

  25. So will we have a UFC fight of Optimus vs Amazon bot?

  26. Lol people freaking out for nothing. Just look at how slow the robots are and of course the demo has them moving empty boxes. This is just pr

  27. Good. Robots can help us build a better civilization AND explore space (and the ocean!).

  28. Just hire more humans for 250,000 that will pay a few salaries for entry level workers.

  29. It's about time.. it's obviously more efficient.. and in the end less costly. Robots only need maintenance, like any other machine. They don't eat nor sleep.. nor do they need benefits or time off, or Holidays.. they also don't need a wage increase..nor even tax information. It's a win all around. I'm shocked more companies haven't gone this route

  30. UAW will be less relevant if the auto firms start to use more robots.

  31. Let me say this, if my experience on worker safety at Amazon reflects Amazon as a whole, Amazon policy on worker safety is too extreme. Amazon is all about being safe , working safe, it's ridiculously safe. Safety officers and safety associates are involved in daily work. They are always available to any concerns that employees have regarding safety, and encourage conversations concerning safety issues. You will not get in trouble at Amazon for being safe. Employees cant even use a screwdriver unless they are trained. Every aspect of being safe is incorporated into training, associates are encouraged to be safe, and not to do anything they are not trained to do. I could complain about a lot of things, and i do complain, but concerning safety, my complaint is that it is too safe. So much that i feel like it makes the job much more difficult than necessary, and in some ways, being too safe actually causes injuries.

  32. I guess I’ll start mapping out underground tunnel systems for when the robots starts to revolt

  33. AMZ will only need drivers and pilots if this comes to fruition.

  34. 😂😂😂 no jobs for humans, human can't buy anything, and they got a factory full of robots with nothing to do. 😂😂

  35. Warehouses can be made to be relatively safe, these robots would be better used in places where it's not safe for humans to be such as mining or factories where there are a lot of chemicals, etc.

  36. Well robots dont feel entitlement so that is a plus for every business.

  37. Once agility opens robofab the price, of digit, is going to drop.

  38. I guess they will stop complaining now!

  39. The fact he said these robots don't have to go home to see its family, doesn't need health care benefits, shows you they really don't care about us

  40. 2 years ago ppl where like wow $20hourly to work at Amazon warehouse i knew it was only for a while till they got all there robots going is a company who made real American companies close dwn i miss sears n kmart 😆 they want self driving trucks ,robot warehouse workers i think usa entirely should stop ordering from Amazon n let are country produce usa made products instead of letting ppl order on the computer all there china products there selling online they killing are economy n making 1 man richer i dont understand America they preach not to buy china products but Amazon is selling all there products cheaper than american products hope mr.amazon is paying chinas debt to usa

  41. t/ answer is govt intervention t/ form of monthly UBI 🤑

  42. Im glad i fix machines..goodluck everyone else.
