Across the U.S., public transit workers are facing a dramatic spike in violent attacks, with bus drivers being frequently targeted. According to the Federal Transit Administration, in recent years there has been a 121 percent increase in transit worker assaults. Candice Nguyen from NBC Bay Area has more details.

Had a bus driver get attacked LAPD was literally a couple cars down the street by the subway station the bus driver was honking with the front and back doors open and they never came to his rescue guy eventually got off the bus

I knew that was why violence has risen. Avarice and greed. Now, the drivers want little prisons,to keep them safe. I told you all, the surveillance would increase crime. Yet, you listened to the looters.
I just think its funny that the answer everyone has is "ah shoot, well, heck, ain't nothing we can do can we? maybe add in bulletproof glass?" and the obvious answer is just to allow them if they choose to carry a weapon for self defense and then continue working on a bigger solution.
So… which demographic is responsible for the vast majority of these assaults… or, are you not alowed to call them out?
Transit busses are a microcosm of society. All of societies ills which more often than not are dealt with by law enforcement. Bus operators must deal with without weapons or social work training.
Transit companies must decide if ridership, or safety and quality of service are the goal.

Although the vast majority of all of my customers were appreciative, I was assaulted numerous times during my career as a Transit Driver in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Drivers are serving a diverse community, many of whom have special needs. These courageous men and women need to be fully supported by their employers, law enforcement, and the community. The assaults must stop!

Not just to bus drivers, transit systems are very dangerous. A lot of homeless and crimes occurring there.

Those people need to be banned from the busses period, and yeah I notice security, but the issue with that is I never really see them on the busses except when it interferes with money, such as the Las Vegas strip, otherwise we never see them.

My 2 cents: All actions go back to the family, roots, and parenting. If the parenting and childhood environment is not right, humans as adults, most of the times turn out to be bad citizens who generally are disreespectful and harmful to other human beinings. Values are taught when you are young. Children and adults need to have discipline and respect for laws, and deep respect for every other living being on Earth. Divorces and unfit parents are harming human society in many ways. Unruly, harmful passengers on planes, trains, busses, unruly students in classrooms — all may be rooted to disfunctional home and family envionrment. That is all, very unfortunately.

No ghetto is complete without an abundance of plastic barriers. KFC is down with the plastic barriers, but surprisingly, I've never seen a McDonald's with plastic barriers.

What? The solution is to redesign the bus? Redesigned bus won't stop the violence in Oakland, especially if they have the guns. Why doesn't FTA borrow the FAA solution? No one with guns should be allowed to board and deploy BUS Marshalls with guns to ensure the safety of not only the driver but also passengers.
This is why those who can avoid riding mass transit.
If a company can not protect their bus drivers then they need to shut down. That plastic crap won't work. Get real.
We need to have self driving electric cars by now for public transit. The technology is there to create electric car pods. Big diesel buses need to go. People are starting to not be mature and civil enough to even ride a bus together.

I drove public transit for five years and another three for a senior center. We didn't have any cameras capturing scenes inside but you would have seen a core of drivers who wouldn't put up with anything compromising safety of the driver, passengers, or the vehicle. Times have changed. Good luck out there and be safe!
