It continues to amaze me how poorly educated people are in the US. The southern states left the union and were then invaded by forces from the north. Most of the people that fought in the War Between the States never owned slaves. They fought for their homes and lives. Think about it, the north was rich with industry and the south had what they needed to operate the industry. Big Cotton. Nookie Haley may be American but she knows very little about southern tradition.

"What do you want me to say? Of course, slavery was absolutely the primary and driving issue for the politicians of the States that rebelled and for the 31% of Southern citizens who held slaves. We know this because three states said so explicitly in their acts of secession from the Union and several of the ten others clearly supported the right of states to retain slavery. But let's not kid ourselves. their claims of what we today call 'federal overreach' and loss of state sovereignty was really just a doge to preserve an evil. And ending that evil cost the lives of seven hundred-thousand Americans."

Where is the controversy here? Perhaps she thought that everyone knew the traditional accepted answer was slavery, and assumed the questioner was looking for a non traditional answer such as the politics involved between the Northern and Southern states. Personally I was confused as to why such an obvious question would be asked. I certainly didn't see any racial undertones in her answer. This is the media trying to make her out to be some type of racist which is ludicrous. They did the same thing to Trump and they will attempt to do it to her. Racism is the only card the democrats can run on. They certainly won't be running on Biden's accomplishments.

For all you people out there claiming that the democrats are actually the party of slavery, why is it that democrats will never hesitate to say that the civil war was caused by slaver, and never hesitate to take down confederate statues, etc. It is always republicans perpetuating the lost cause myth and trying to downplay the role of slavery in America's past and appease southern voters.

Read what Lincoln said when he supported the secession of Texas from Mexico then apply it to the southern states. This "war" was to keep the rich southern states in the union to fund his government. PERIOD. Shall I provide you with Lincolns speech? ok I will.
In a speech delivered in the House of Representatives on January 12, 1848, Abraham Lincoln expressed his views on the Mexican-American War and, by extension, the secession of Texas from Mexico. Here is an excerpt from that speech:
"ANY (emphasis mine) people ANYWHERE (emphasis mine), being inclined and having the power, have the RIGHT (Emphasis mine) to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, – a most sacred right – a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world. Nor is this right confined to cases in which the whole people of an existing government, may choose to exercise it. Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize, and make their own, of so much of the territory as they inhabit."
What changed? He became President and realized the southern states leaving would seriously defund his government. Had zero to do with slavery. remember…he engage in the war by not removing federal troops from a sovereign nation…the WAR had zero to do with slavery….dont confuse secession with war….Lincoln could have let them leave peacefully. end of debate.

This insulting and unconstitutional demand was met with great moderation and firmness by the South. We had shed our blood and paid our money for its acquisition; we demanded a division of it on the line of the Missouri restriction or an equal participation in the whole of it. These propositions were refused, the agitation became general, and the public danger was great. The case of the South was impregnable. The price of the acquisition was the blood and treasure of both sections– of all, and, therefore, it belonged to all upon the principles of equity and justice."
The civil war was about whether or not states could secede. Lincoln actually said that he was willing to keep slavery or abolish it, whichever would keep the United States together.
I'm not a fan of Haley but it should be a 100% given that slavery is bad and no explanation is necessary.
