I've been given several "gift" cards to places I would never go. And I don't.
You should be able to sell them for cash at any accepting store.
These retailers certainly make out.Better off just giving people cash

It does differ from state to state, in MA gift cards do not expire and can't charge any fees !

Why give gift cards? Waste of money.
A few years ago, here in Canada, they had to change the rules on gift cards. For example, I would receive a gift card for Christmas, then go to use it a few months later, & either the dollar amount had diminished, or even the card was empty.😂
Why not give cash with a post it note with the name of the company you thought they wanted??
