An NYU study published in the medical journal Neurology on sudden unexplained death in children found evidence of febrile seizures in some of the cases. NBC News’ Kate Snow has more details on the findings of the study.

Leaving babies to sleep alone in cribs is actually quite dangerous. This is one example of why co-sleeping next to or in the same room as your baby (following safety guidelines) actually adds another level of safety. Imagine if the parents had been right next to their baby or at least in the same room. It’s possible they might not have been able to save him anyway, but there’s a higher chance of it if they’d been there and therefore able to notice what was happening sooner. 😢 It’s still not their fault, and I’m very sorry for their loss, but it is also still a good argument for co-sleeping.

This little boy may have had Dravet syndrome. My friend’s child has this and is monitored at all times during sleep for a seizure or low oxygen/not breathing, and it is the number one cause of death for Dravet kids. 😢

As a Pediatric resident doc very early in my career, this video was so heartbreaking to watch but also very inspiring to change how I will approach simple febrile seizures. In med school, I was taught that simple febrile seizures are truly harmless, and it was completely unnecessary to do anything about them beyond tight fever control. WE WERE EXPLICITLY TAUGHT TO DISCOURAGE PARENTS FROM ALL OF THESE EXTRA MONITORS! As “extensive research” showed they have not lead to any benefit in death prevention, but lead to increased parental anxiety and increased clinic visits as parents over analyze the small normal changes in oxygen levels. Idk if these monitors are in fact the answer or if I would recommend them if they truly have not led to changes in death rates, but I will for sure keep up with ongoing research on this topic, and stop viewing febrile seizures as being so benign…. And hate to admit I have definitely been taught to tell parents “if a kid had to get some type of seizure, this is the type you would want as it is so benign.” Feel horrible if that is not the case… Thank God for ongoing learning!!! My heart goes out to this family and so many in the comments ❤
I am so glad they are beginning to find answers for these poor families… I am often scared to sleep to make sure my child is breathing. My husband calls me crazy, my parents and in-laws say I am overprotective… I'm not wrong for waking up every so often to check on my baby.
This is actually amazing because all those families and current parents kept being told that they were doing something wrong for having things in the crib or just having no reason can now begin to find solace in the fact that they weren't to blame.
I think I will definitely get one of those monitors for my next baby.

The owlet sock was the best thing I ever bought. I had extreme anxiety over something like this or SIDS. I didn’t sleep the three nights in the hospital after he was born. Once we were home and could put the owlet on I could finally sleep (still not great with all the anxiety). I would get extreme anxiety again in the day when we’d take it off to charge it. All those parents heart break…I just can’t imagine!!
Losing any young child is tragic and devastating. When are parents going to question and reject the ridiculously high number of required childhood vaccines given in the US from infancy through age 18 these days? Very few were given to baby boomers only one generation ago? I saw a chart that showed the number has risen from 6 to 76! It's absurd and unwise!

The more that society rejects the practice of having their baby sleep in a separate room in a crib alone the more we will see this. Children that young by nature are supposed to be next to their mom when they sleep

I’m an ED nurse. Every child I’ve attended that’s had a febrile seizure has had one a day to a week or so after being vaccinated per parents report. Causation or correlation? I have no idea. Just reporting my observations “from the field”

It could NEVER be neurotoxic ingredients in poorly tested vaccines. DO NOT read the ingredients list, DO NOT learn the many adverse reactions… a thousand times we have told y’all…. Pharma tests all their vaccines according to their own protocols, and pharma says it is NeVER their vaccines that are killing our children, so DO NOT even consider neurotoxic injections as a possibility.

I cannot recommend the Owlet Sock enough!! It saved my baby’s life!
For starters, babies and young children should not be sleeping on their own, especially not in an entirely different room. More monitors or fancy devices don't fix the necessary emotional and physical connection that infants need at night that they haven't been getting in recent decades. From there, we can talk about what might be causing these seizures, but until babies are safe and secure next to their mothers when they sleep, we can't say that it doesn't play a role. Either way, regardless of seizures, this should be the norm.
