Social media execs grilled in Congress over child safety concerns

Executives from Meta, TikTok, X, Snap and Discord faced tough questioning about their efforts to combat online sexual abuse. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee said the companies haven’t done enough to keep children safe, with chairman Dick Durbin saying “online child sexual exploitation is a crisis in America.” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized to parents at the hearing. NBC’s Kate Snow reports.

  1. This is the equivalent of if I was drunk driving and got in a crash then sued Ford.

  2. Great example of “ parents letting the Internet raise there kids and getting mad when they turn out the way they don’t want to or something bad happening”

  3. What if I told you that the block button exists 🤯🤯

  4. So shut it down . So this doesn’t happen again

  5. Kids don’t need social media

  6. Social Media Companies do nothing nothing nothing to protect children or families.
Social media opened the floodgates to every predator n deviat n doesn't care. They say they do but actions speak louder than words.

  7. shame on those parents, out of control then blame others. and this hearing is waste of people's tax.

  8. Mark Zuckerberg helps Donald Trump elections give to him millions confidencial information from users facebook. Nothing in justice that has their human rights abuses in Facebook wasnt go ahead. He abuses people spot in congress but he as media dictator he put out human rights to trash basket. Mark Zuckerberg dictator media back again in Congress . now hearing about children abuses concern their health minds that dictator of the media let them with panic and anxious . nothing about his crimes in Meta absolutetly nothing is stopping this horrendous dictator of the media. Put him in jail is doing justice for children.

  9. The parent of the bullies should apologize

  10. I don't have good opinion on these tech dudes and the revolutionary brilliant life-changing ideas that they come up with, but I don't think they should be fully responsible for the child safety issue.

  11. Failed parents trying to blame..

  12. Lindsay graham saying they have blood on their hands? Yet he’s against better gun laws….he also has blood on his hands. All of the GOP have blood on their hands.

  13. A lot of this and I would say 95% of this comes down to the parents. They just throw these devices and their kids hands and say keep yourself busy and whatever happens from that point on is in they just throw these devices and their kids hands and say keep yourself busy. Kids are highly neglected these days and technology is way too advanced for that to be happening. Next thing you know you're underage kid is ordering Mass amounts of narcotics from another country

  14. That was the biggest BS and heartless apology I've ever seen in my life. This dude is definitely a snake Mark Zuckerberg is even starting to look like a reptile

  15. I'm a Gen Y and I know better than to talk to strangers online. I didn't even know there was exploitation or any of the obscene things mentioned in the testimony on Instagram…you really have to go out of your way to find it. The teens are stupid prey for horrible people, that's all I can say.

  16. Yes blame the social media companies. Look at trump using social media for threaten political opponents, making fun of his opponents, and spreading lies. Parents need to watch their kids.

  17. this is like OxyContin all over again. They created it. Said it was no addictive and that it was safe. How many died?

  18. Not every child has a parent that cares…not every child has a parent…who’s going to monitor those kids? Experts know the statistics…so yes, it is their job to make sure it’s safe for all before they put it into the public’s hands.

  19. Parents, don't just blame these CEOs, but take RESPONSIBILITY for not doing a thing to keep your children safe, spend some time with them. Parents are to blame for their children's actions.

  20. FXXK YOUR APOLOGIES!!! Yite people AND their apologies crack me up. It is not OK if you say you're sorry I don't give A. I'm about to sorry the damage!!!!

  21. THIS IS A MAN Who bought anchors and acres of land in hawaii after the fires. Is hallow man HAS NO SOUL!!!! GREED is his god

  22. I find it funny that now NBC cares but when i emailed them in 2020 with the sickening things happening on twitter, silence.

  23. Keep your kids off of phones and social media. Problem solved.🙏

  24. The youngest you could be on social media is 13 years old, it should be 18 years old. Shame on him for not protecting children like he should have.

  25. Kick all the kids of social media, they need to live in the real world growing up.

  26. Some of the CEO's should be held accountable. It's long overdue. 🌎💯💐🌟🦋

  27. This is what theyre upset about. Yall thats on you to over see who and how theyre messaging. If youre letting them online and give them freedoms to text/call whoever, you are trusting their judgement. If Facebook didnt exists youd still be seeing the same problem, just through a different sorce.

  28. Mitch you have American Blood on your hands, Isstagram cut me off for no reason yet FB, instgram X and all those SM allow Hookers With Explicit photos, abd I get cut off without harming anyone or making any threats. And I dont post nude photos. But get banned for warning people about preditors?

  29. He’s removing pro republican and Israeli comments fast as can while promoting terrorism

  30. He said I know you dont know this, but you have blood on your hands.. theyve known and chose to keep doing harmful things. According to Facebook's own internal studies, they could see a % increase in suicide depending on how they ran the algorithms, and kept doing it and other negative things like that because it was more profitable to pump negative emotions. Negativity is more reactive and reactions get clicks and views.

  31. Ok but shouldn’t parents be on the hook for this? I have a daughter and I wouldn’t let her use any social media til shes 16. It’s like suing a straw company for accidentally poking your eye

  32. Blaming these tech companies is the equivalent of blaming the Internet service provider, phone provider or any other communication source. Parents monitor your children. Parents teach your children. Parents parent.

  33. No prison time, this is a joke

  34. I don't see Josh Hawley apologize for his action leading to Jan 6…. and would Ted Cruz talk tough with Trump like this for destroying our democracy?!

  35. This is why my mother (of 5 girls) had only 1 PC in the house for my sisters and I. In the middle of the living room for all to see. If we wanted a smartphone, we had to pay our own bill. And we didn't get an allowance, so we had to get a job.

  36. From my perspective, this was a complete waste of time, when Congress people own stock in these companies, and these companies allegedly work for the CIandA!

If you want to protect kids, put the bible and discipline back in schools, and the ones over forty, in Congress, already know this is what's wrong with the kids in this country.

Replace DHS with parents that fear God and not kids! Feeds kids real food like they do in Japan, and don't give them phones until they are sixteen years old.

Problem solvers are not in Washington DC!

  37. At what point are parents going to be held liable for neglecting their children? They are the guardians responsible for raising, training and protecting their kids. Are they too busy? Blaming books, video games, movies, and now apps…is a scapegoat for poor parenting.

  38. Something about the demeanor of these congress members looks entirely performative.

  39. Easy, keep your children off socials.

  40. Nice I'm sure justice will fail

  41. Hey 👋 Don't forget "Roblox, ya" 😉 A Grown man pretended to be a 14-year-old male teen who wanted my kid to send nude photos 📸 Oh no u don't!!! Thank God I was active on her account. She stopped playing ▶️ the game 🎮 a little afterward because we felt unsafe enough

  42. Take responsibility parents, you're grown adults, jeez.
