Wasn't he looking at his phone as he neared the end of the walkway and needed to step off? That could have helped avoid the problem. However, maintenance should have turned off the walkway until the missing plate was replaced as that can certainly be dangerous as past incidents have shown.

On top of his face being buried in his phone like a teenaged girl, we see him stand-up calmly and casually… so he of course fakes an injury. There's a piece of guard missing… he's a pilot so he probably has seen that more than once so he (poorly) staged an insurance scam. Only in America, where the national sport is suing people. I was there he was drunk and was looking at his phone, so it says his fault. He’s not gonna get any money because you can see clearly he’s drunk and looking at his phone when he was on the walkway.

Usually, it's when the 'comb plate' at the end is loose or set too high. Happens with vertical escalators all the time, often with sandal-wearers.

Anywhere else in the world, everyone would know, this guy did it to himself… but in the USA… sue sue sue… people don't like to take responsibility for their own actions… or lack of awareness around them.
He was on his phone and not paying attention. You can’t sue when you’re the person that was negligent around equipment that can potentially harm you. There’s a “Yellow” caution strip which he failed to identify and walked right into. Lift your foot instead of letting it get sucked under. I think this was intentional or he is so negligent that this should be thrown out.
