A new study has highlighted a concerning safety issue. As the vehicles on the roadways in the United States have gotten heavier, the guardrails are not functioning as well when there is a crash. NBC News’ Kathy Park has more on what researchers found.

I do not believe it that Rivian weighs 6950 pounds well over three metric tons !!
Trucks go through them too, didnt stop you from upgrading them though, the anti EV narratives is getting old, its the future not the immediate like some people want to try push, but the future nevertheless.
This video report missed the mark, they should have shown conventional automobiles crashing the guard rail too so the viewers can see and understand. Yet another reason why "reporters" need some type of standard or check and balance.
regulate trucks and SUVs too
They’re also more dangerous because 99% of electric vehicle drivers I have encountered drive recklessly.
I believe that since EVs have a lower center of gravity due to having the battery packs in the bottom, the current design of guard rails are not designed to be able to dissipate the momentum effectively. If you look at ICE vehicles when they hit a guard rail, typically they will want to almost tip over. With that, the guard rail uses this to steer the vehicle away from danger. Now I don’t believe this happens 100 percent of the time, but that’s what I’ve seen at less extreme angles than used in this video. I’m not sure if it’s the angle used in this video, but due to the low center of gravity, the EVs didn’t even appear to tip a bit. This does not allow the guard rail to steer the vehicle and renders it completely useless.
Not the size of the car, rather the horsepower of most cars is increasing, 20 years ago it was rarely to see a car with engine over 300 & now with the electric cars mostly are over 500 & can reach 1000
The problem of making guard rails stronger for heavier vehicles besides costing more money is then they might not crumple and cause a sudden stop for lighter vehicles. I say don't worry too much about the EV fad. Companies are scaling way back on production and EV sales have been going down a lot.
Ok so now imaging that pile of trash hitting your Civic imagine that huh something that heavy running threw your car at 60mph because the driver was on her phone
Most cars would go through that at that angle. Guardrails aren't used perpendicular to the roadway like that.
SUVs and "light trucks" are also more likely to flip over the guardrail rather than just crash into it
Now that the guardrails have gotten your attention, imagine those super heavy battery powered vehicles, some in excess of 3-5 tons hitting you in your normal gas car. Maybe you will fare far better….right??
Who’s gonna hit a guard rail at 60 miles an hour head on
Not to mention their heavier occupants…
Hummer EV: Hold my beer
Guardrails are meant to redirect errant cars, not be a complete barrier, at least that has been my impression. The fact that cars go through them, but slowed, shows they're at least working partially well. Hopefully this research will lead to improved designs to match cars currently on the road.
This university sucks so this study is useless
aren’t those designed to be hit by big rigs?
It’s crazy how many people in trucks and SUVs literally have no passengers and no cargo
Thats because your study is intentionally flawed. They don't crash at those angles.
Irrelevant as cars has been heavy for years especially when cars first came out.
HOW ABOUT TRUCKS WITH THEIR CONTAINERS FULL OF GOODS? THEY ARE MUCH HEAVIER THAN ANYTHING.
Just when we all thought bigger was better 😬
Sounds like we just need better drivers 🤣
You can't even talk about safety now because it always leads to conspiracy theories and debunked by self describe YouTube scientists: check out the comments below ⬇️
All who oppose Israel will face desolation! Due to the fact that this is our creators chosen land for his Jewish children! The Jews were the first to realize that Father God made us and that he deserves worship! That makes them the first to know him and the first to receive his blessings! We should all be grateful to the Jews for that reason alone!
Praise the Lord God forever! We are all being tested in our hearts right now to see who you want to follow, love or hate!
I hope everyone chooses Love! Because that is what God wants us to feel for each other!
My Family
One Body In Christ
"Heavier vehicles" Just like the occupants.
Not sure why this is such big news? Let's be honest to ourselves. Guard rails are the least of our concerns today.
Lemme get this straight. Cars are getting heavier and heavier, (which they are) but being made from lighter and lighter material? Planned obsolescence at its finest.
Time to ban Semi trucks. They're too heavy and guard rails can't stop them!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸 🤡🤡
Sure, and instead of manufacturers who make billions coming out with smaller vehicles the tax payers will be paying for new rails.
More fear-mongering. 🙄
Who cares.
Too bad the government banned light trucks because they’re bad at absolutely everything.
Less regulations please who cares about guardrails
where's the 6000lb gas suv vid…..
Speed runners didn’t know you could pass right under the guardrail. Thats a game changer.
so electric cars is going to cost us more ?
So what you saying is democrat policies is In danger america wants again With their green new deal lol… What else is new on the extremists radical democrat socialist party
Then there is a 7000lb suv flying in the air and decimating a 3000lb Sedan
Imagine what happens when these cars hit you in your vehicle…
One family business owns these "guards" its a scham and they've been hiding it for years. They make millions on these garbage "safety " railings
Yeah. I am so f-I g tired of tiny women driving enormous vehicles. They cannot handle them. They have no idea of the size of the things. Heavy, huge vehicles are EVIL. Selfish, avaricious, cruel colostomy bags masquerading as human beings are killing people with impunity.
