A jury has found the NRA and former CEO Wayne Pierre liable in a civil corruption trial. The judge ruled LaPierre diverted millions of dollars from the National Rifle Association to live luxuriously while the group failed to monitor its finances. The verdict comes after five days of deliberations and ends a seven-week long civil corruption trial in New York City.

If he reported his income on the non-profit benefits to the government they would have disallowed the majority of the amount, but some of them would have been allowed as the head of a non-profit and he would just have to pay it back without being charged a fine as punishment. If he played by the rules none of this would have happened, but his greed overcame him.
This IS the NRA's fault : how could they not have public books or external audits – a public non-profit, they had a duty to monitor and control spending, not allow embezzlers to empty the bank.
