Why Connecticut may ban legacy admissions for colleges

Lawmakers in Connecticut are looking to end the controversial legacy admissions for both public and private colleges, saying it’s a question of fairness. State Sen. Derek Slap, who runs the state’s education committee, says schools like Yale should be subject to state law due to taxes.

  3. Woke Tabloid Corporate Censored Media keeps the liberal Freakshow fed!

  4. Hows Americas "SECURE" border NBC? Cat got your tongue?

  5. "one of the most controversial practices" Legacy admissions are anything but controversial.

  6. Others can start doing legacy as well they can actually do the same thing but rather fight

  7. College should be about learning and if you want keep certain students out who don’t meet your standards then loop holes do seem inappropriate.

  8. Why would anybody care. There are over 1000 colleges in the US. I think 99% of all people could care less.

  9. I think private universities should be allowed to do whatever they want, but yes, public schools should obviously not allow this practice.

  10. This is a mistake. It will ruin class-based society.

  11. opportunity equality is extremely important especially with times like now, when there are huge gap for both income and wealth.

  12. Just admitting to the world tgat your students really aren't intelligent and are really just a joke will maje a difference . The credentials don't mean 💩💩💩💩

  13. Lol because legacy doesn't mean smart or good work ethic

  14. This should be a federal law

  15. Removing Legacy admissions would definitely "move the needle" on equity. My sharecropper grandfather did not have an Ivy League legacy to pass on to me ; ) That being said, when government starts saying "Do it our way, or you're no longer a nonprofit" they're overstepping their bounds. Next thing you know, they'll be telling Churches to violate their beliefs, or lose nonprofit status. Nonprofit organizations should not be controlled by their tax exempt status – otherwise, they're just government organizations.

  16. Legacy is how schools raise money.

  17. Wealthy families keeping you under their thumb for hundreds of years. How we let this happen in a free nation?

  18. It's about money. Rich alumni donate money.

  19. Yet people want to cry over affirmative action when rich white and black families have created an affirmative action of their own.

  20. Sure definitely make sense and fair for the public. These rich billionaires legacy donors are going to ban their generous donations too. Then government will probably start pressuring these colleges to lower their tuitions. The college then go broke. No income= less funding into research, less quality education. Less kids going into college trending will start to accumulate. Then massive uneducated people. Still legacy admissions are not fair.

  21. This should have been done 50 years ago but better late than never.

  22. Bahahaha why is this even a thing ? America is a joke.

  23. The universities are a disaster right now. Try something! Anything!

  24. Didn't even know this was a thing. They should have started with this a long time ago instead of affirmative action

  25. Fantastic decision. Universities should only be based on merit.

  26. Do you know how many students in ivy leagues get in on legacy? Of the ones I have met, maybe 1/4th. Most of the students are not dumb and are also smart and hard working, but they are not anymore outstanding and get pref just because they have connections and feel entitled.

  27. Whether or not you get into an ivy league college is dependent on many factors you cant control

  28. There should be a national ban on legacy admissions

  29. This is a form of slavery. Legacy for rich families.

  30. Legacies are a joke. I was accepted into two state universities by working hard in community college.

  31. Good!!! about time!

  32. Wow that's not right the family put millions in them school s

  33. Good no free-loaders. Apply, get accepted or rejected.

  34. So they can remove a barrier to indoctrination

  35. Emphas is on MAY.
It'$ never going to happen. #moneytalks

  36. Good, since it has nothing to do with qualifications to learn, just to be related. You get GW Bushes that way, all shallow ends of the gene pool. Not even good enough to get a real S/B brand, he used a paper clip, ha ha ha.

  37. But if Legacy admissions aren't upheld, how will the rich get their children into college? Their since of privilege and standing over others will be diminished, oh no😢

  38. However bad a college's entrance criteria might be, its not as bad as the government saying who gets in.
