Petraeus thinks Russia is doing poorly. Petraeus knows how easy it is to flatten cities like Kyiv and rule over the ruins, such as he did in Iraq. Also, he says the Russian attack has killed civilians, but I'd point out that the Russians haven't killed one tenth of the civilians America has killed in our own illegal wars. These are just simple facts.

Russia is fighting with a small army of 200.000 soldiers. Ukraine has 250.000 + 300k reservists. Russia needs to mobilise at least 500k more soldiers in order to prevail in Ukraine. The Ukraine army is hiding in cities. Ukraine is a big country which is bigger than France or Spain and much bigger than Germany. If Russia does not mobilise more troops it will be a pease treaty in some weeks.

One or two things: if Putin will conquer Mariupol and will keep it after the peace negotiations, then he achieved his basic goals (for his Russophones) all Russians will e happy.
