Long Island police say they’ve identified the killer responsible for the death of a young woman in 1980, 42 years later on the date of her murder. The case remained cold until a familial DNA match revealed the murder’s identity.

In the UK we have been able to do this too. DNA evidence is crucial in solving these old cases. Condolences to the family, but at least they now can get closure. If this person is tried unless he's dead, they can all find out why, he did it, and even if he is dead, an enquiry might still establish the motive.

My biggest concern with the use of this technology is the risk of cross contamination with long term storage.
It would be a shame to arrest the wrong person because a box of unrelated evidence leaked onto the evidence box for another case, or more likely samples got filed back wrong and mixed up with another case’s evidence.
