The Russian troops continue following the orders by attacking peaceful Ukrainian settlements, shelling cities and towns, firing on civilians. The Russians are also plundering, mining fields, forests and even the bodies of tortured Ukrainians. Many people have lost all their property, documents and, unfortunately, their relatives.
Now I want to draw your attention to the city of Irpin, which is located near Kyiv and is now the hottest zone in this unfair war. All the infrastructure has been destroyed, and everything that couldn’t be destroyed had been burnt to the ground. Unfortunately, this is our new reality and the only one thing is to accept it. Ukraine has taken the brunt of the world's second-largest army. The price for it is too high, the official sources reporting about more than tens of thousands of lives and hundreds of thousands of crippled victims.
Before the invasion of Russian troops, the city of Irpin was the most beautiful city in Ukraine, where young families and children mostly lived. Kindergartens, schools and entertainment centres were being built. In addition to the fact that Irpin is located in the middle of a pine forest, the city itself used to have dozens of wonderful parks where people used to meet and contemplate the gorgeous nature, to stroll with their children, enjoying their peaceful lives… Those who have managed to survive and leave have now no place to return, nothing to count on. There are no words which can be found to explain children why they are now forced to live in dormitories with inappropriate conditions. There are no words to describe how devastated we feel.
I am neither a politician nor a public figure, I am an ordinary citizen of Ukraine, my name is Oleh. My wife and I have been working hard for years to have the housing of our dream in the city of Irpin. We have been dreaming of children, so we had been trying to make our home the best place in the world so that our children could grow up in love and in good conditions. We were thinking about their future… After the invasion began, we went outside to find out from our neighbors who was planning to leave and who was staying, but at that very time the rocket shelling began and we were forced to flee. We never returned home. And we will not return without your help.
We are pleading you not to remain indifferent to the grief of the Ukrainian people and help rebuild our small city of Irpin. The city where, I hope, the young life will still flourish.
With the help we hope to receive from you, we will first help all the children whose parents’ lives were taken away by the war. Then, we will rebuild our apartments and help the charity organizations dealing with bringing the city of Irpin to life!

I think a lot of people here misunderstand how asylum works. Crossing the border to ask for asylum is LEGAL and is the only option for people immediately fleeing war. You have to present yourself at a U.S. port of entry or on U.S. soil; this is how our system functions under international law. If you don't like it, ask your elected officials to create more pathways to come here legally. Imagine fleeing a warzone to ask for safety, and instead you're locked up for nearly three weeks. This center in Louisiana is known for its poor conditions and numerous human rights abuses.
