The Russian fear of Nazism does not date back to the 90's haha. Obviously it dates to WW2 when Russia was invaded by nazi Germany.
Russia was aware that Germany's Nazi party was funded and controlled by America for the purpose of attacking Russia.
It's natural, then, for Russia to be pre-emptive when they see a growing Nazi militarism in Ukraine that is killing Ukrainians just outside of Russia.
Pre-emptive military action is certainly something the United States understands.

One follow up: US pre-emptive self-defense takes place in countries on the other side of the globe from the United states.
