A basketball team manager’s moment bigger than the game

When the junior varsity basketball team at Philip Simmons High School was closing its season earlier this month, team manager and freshman Carson Watters was surprised with a moment to shine on the court. Playing sports means everything to Carson, but because he has Down Syndrome, keeping up with other kids has been challenging. So, when coach Ryan McCauley waved Carson onto the court for a chance to make a shot, he kept trying till he made it in. NBC News’ Kate Snow shares Carson’s family and team’s emotional reaction to the big moment.

  1. Well done mom and dad! You have encouraged and supported this fine young man to be all that he can be despite challenges!

  2. Took at least three shots. Maybe give him one crack at it at the beginning of each quarter and if he goes zero for four, so be it. At least a basket in that way would feel more like he earned it. This way doesn't seem any different than a bucket in practice.

  3. When I went to school, kids like Carson would get bullied and made fun of, I'm glad to see it's different now these days.

  4. Nice of the opposing team to let them do this
