This announcement seems to be remarkably over-hyped. The experiment actually consumes over 300 mega joules of energy to produce 3.5 mega joules of power if you don't include energy accounting trick that skips the real power input requirements to fire the laser. AND the laser damages itself each time it fire. More appropriate headline would be "Evil Nuclear Weapons Lab produces fusion reaction that uses an order of magnitude more energy than it produces and blows up their lasers in the process". Why exactly this huge promotion is being undertaken by the LLL and US government is unclear. The technique used is considered by most to be impractical and is not the 'future' of fusion, but a technical breakthrough in a purely statistical sense, demonstrating something that was already theoretically a well established fact (fusion is real and it can produce a lot of energy from hydrogen isotopes when they fused, which happens naturally within the cores of stars due to the immense pressures and temperatures that exist therein).
The real breakthrough is still more than 20 years away, when someone can demonstrate that a fusion reaction generates more energy than the TOTAL amount of energy in (with no energy accounting tricks, and at costs and via methods with some practical possibility of being commercialized).
This is a completely fraudulent and overblown “breakthrough”. Just another money grab for something that will never produce grid energy.
