Helpful coverage, but I think you (and almost everyone else) are using the wrong terminology. IVF involves BLASTOCYSTs, NOT EMBRYOs and BLASTOCYSTs ARE MUCH YOUNGER AND LESS DEVELOPED. Look it up. Oxford Dictionary defines EMBRYO as “a human offspring during the period from approximately the second to the eighth week after fertilization (after which it is usually termed a fetus).” Instead, IVF involves BLASTOCYSTs which are groups of 200-300 cells that can subsequently differentiate into the placenta and the fetus. Wikipedia says “The use of BLASTOCYSTs in in vitro fertilization (IVF) involves culturing a fertilized egg for five days before transferring it into the uterus.” Since cell growth is exponential there is a big difference between 5 days and 2-8 weeks. If people understood that BLASTOCYSTs are well before what eventually becomes the baby differentiates from the placenta, they might be materially less likely to think of them as "babies". More broadly, how can the public be expected to have the right ideas about IVF if news agencies don’t even use the right words?!

So glad I'm 40… Even tho multiple doctors wont tie my tubes like im gonna change my mind at 50 or something..i feel like now, if i get pregnant, I almost wouldnt feel safe…know what will stem from this? What’s funny is Republicans got what they want on abortion rights and defining what a baby is, but now they keep having to go back and fix the mess piecemeal because they didn’t “mean it like that”. These are the unintended consequences for making societal decisions based on faith rather than science. On a personal level you believe what you believe but that doesn’t belong in our laws.
