Water can't hide inside of it like hollow USB-C types. That makes it more rugged in mobile environments. The iOS user base will never let the EU eviscerate our Lightning devices and cables. That's millions of vehicles cut off from Apple Music Lossless on new iPhones. Millions of sound systems. The collateral damage to everything with a Lighting or 30 pin port working with the iPhone is too much to tolerate. Apple doesn't even make a 30 pin to USB-C adapter cable, they're surprised by Lightning's destruction now and may not extend USB-C beyond the European market.

Apple insists on using Apple authorized charging products as to not damage your device too as some chargers may deliver too much power, but most phones to a good job of controlling the input. I’ll just buy some new Apple authorized USB-C cables to be safe.

There lighting port is durable. People have test it with type c and show a better score although it have been 10 years old till today right now.
