Officials say at least five people died after a crash involving multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck carrying anhydrous ammonia, led to a toxic leak and an evacuation near Teutopolis, Illinois.

so why do they allow tankers to haul 7500 gallons of the stuff on public highways? idk what its like out there, but in NJ i can tell you the roads are lawless. just the other day i saw a car driving dangerously INFRONT of the a state trooper, didn't care. you can haul enough chems to wipe out a town but I can't have a can of break clean because "too many VOCS", whole system is a joke.
So basically that whole area is filled with Amonia just like what caused the crash and the tanker will continue to leak until it empties. They have no specialized spectrum vision goggles or camera to see where the leak is coming from, and not enough hazard gear to wear within the vicinity of it to plug the leak or hook up to offload the remaining gas.
Maybe this isn't a Great way to transport chemicals and gases, but what are the options?

I would hate to survive a crash only to die from inhaling ammonia. Hopefully that didnt happen here.
Anyone who lives here knows they just spray this stuff into the fields. Every spring you have to watch out for any ammonia spraying because the farmers just don't care if a cloud of it disrupts traffic. They used to care but they don't anymore. Its extremely dangerous if you're on a motorcycle and you can't shut off your air supply.
What I'm saying is: the amount of ammonia released in this crash is absolutely nothing compared to the amount of ammonia intentionally released next to highways and rural roads.

I was on a processing boat in Alaska when a major ammonia leak occurred…i was on deck which was well away from the leak but it absolutely dropped me in my tracks.
