A bill in Rhode Island would allow drivers with autism to add a special tag to their license or plates to help alert law enforcement.

  1. ITS A CURABLE DISEASE, BUT CARS ARE SUCH A DISEASE.

  2. I wish people would just wear signs around the neck. Just would love to know right away who I'm talking to. Just saying.

  3. I would not consider it an act of discrimination, but rather a better communication strategy between the autism community who are drivers (including myself) and police officers. I am the cousin of the student who came up with the bill, and I testified with him, though my testimony was never publicized. It is an optional choice, just like people claim it to be

  4. Lol everyone has autism this year šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

  5. Are the handicap people triggered by their special license plates? When I see a slow driver with the blue tags, I patiently make my way around them. Had I not seen the blue tags, I probably would’ve tailgated, honked, flashed the high beams, swerve around, and did a break check. LoL. Jk. Not all that, but when I see handicap or old people driving… I have more patience.

  6. I think it is a great idea, but no one is forced to get it. I remember seeing a video a year or two ago of a deaf black man who was pulled over. He was trying his best to convey to the cops that he was deaf, of course they thought he was resisting. The poor man went through hell. You could tell by the body cams that the man was deaf and was terrified because he couldn’t understand what they wanted him to do.

  7. I am always terrified of the police killing me due to my Autism. I wouldn't mind it on my if it keeps them from killing me. My nervous system goes really bad when the cops ate there and they think I'm on drugs or a threat but I'm not it's bad I'm always scared of it. I was mad when I saw the headline but after a few min of explanation I'm all for it yes please

  8. It’s optional. If you don’t want it, don’t use it.

  9. My son is autistic and i support this. He is very smart but has difficulty communicating.

  10. It's not even just more children being screened. It's the perception of what autism looks like. No one on the spectrum fits in a box.

  11. Very good job fellows!! Congratulations throughout the 4th week of said March y'all. Does allergy season confuse the autism spectrum? Two words dudes: IT'S OPTIONAL!

  12. Shut up😫

  13. Why am I seeing a yellow star or a pink triangle in my mind's eye while hearing this story? Oh yeah, I'm an adult Aspie and this is a ridiculous idea.

  14. Police officers should be required to have at least a 4 year degree in law enforcement before they are allowed to become cops this 6 month police academy training they are doing is clearly insufficient

  15. I think people without autism will abuse this. Especially criminals. People need to be screened for autism, but then again I can see people "identifying as autistic" even though they have no formal diagnosis or symptoms. Sad state of the world, but it will be exploited.

  16. Autism was an evolutionary advantage n the old society, now it's a disability. Society is the problem, not functioning autistic people.

  17. Maybe better training

  18. It’s not like you’re forced to do it. At the same time with some of these levels of anxiety I don’t know if they should be screaming down the 40 one declaring to the world I’m autistic so therefore you must leave me alone lol are there numbers to prove otherwise?

  19. people with autism shouldnt drive… wtf lmao

  20. As a mother of a teenager with autism I would like to add it to his license because if he is pulled over and starts acting anxious or doesnt respond well due to his autism the officer wont mistake his actions or responses as trying to be uncooperative or suspicious. I don't know why anyone would be against a voluntary declaration on someone else's licensešŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

  21. I know here in Ontario personally 2 children that have been labeled with autism just so they get extra help even though they don't have autism As when they were tested showed. But they still say autism so they get the extra help.

  22. okay but i really agree with this because there are times where cops wrongly assume they’re on drugs or something and start being very impatient and aggressive towards those with mental issues

  23. I don’t know why some people with Autism are against this. If they don’t want to use them, they don’t have to. Let the ones that want to use them, use them, simple. You can’t please everyone.

  24. My student driver sticker helps a lot. It works.

  25. I have one of these on my TX license. Instead of saying ā€œautismā€ it just says ā€œcommunication impedimentā€ which is much more broad. Also, the label goes on the vehicle registration, not the license plate, so the alert will only pop up if an officer runs your plates instead of being plainly visible for all to see

  26. Manufacturered controversy

  27. If you ain't willin to give someone a check for it as an adult.. don't ask for anyone's license..
