Behind the racial disparities in New York City’s public schools

NBC’s Ron Allen sat down with incoming first-year students at Stuyvesant High School, who are among the small percentage of Black and Latino students admitted to the school. He discusses how the skewed demographics are raising questions about the admission process.

  1. you should not go to a high school based on your skin colour but on your academic abilities🤔

  2. Another example of problems with this system. I tried to get into Stuyvesant high. The entry exam had alegebra on it. My school did not teach us alebra, however, I received an A when I finally learned it took exams. You see Mr Lui, things are NOT equal in America. Your students don’t live in the poverty black areas. I eventually became a physician , top performing once I received the same information for preparation.

  3. Maybe John Lui can explain why Asian owned companies only hire Asians: hair stores, Chinese restaurants, nail salons, Sony executive suites, etc. surely you don’t need top sat scores to sell Chinese food. The Chinese experience is NOT the black American slavery experience and the consequences of it. I can’t compete at an exam when I don’t have the exact same tools. We often catch up and bypass in order to compete. Mr Lui you can’t compare apples with oranges. A significant amount of your people are selfish and don’t share.

  4. So asian students are now outperforming yt students? Wow I wonder how yt ppl feel about this? 🤔

  5. So why are dems blocking school choice and charter schools?

    Trump 2024

  6. All those tests for all skin colors are stupid, anyone should be allowed to go to any college

  7. It is time for Asians to bring new knowledge to the world. We can't do everything in the West. That they create new theories that explain the world and are useful. And that they not only limit themselves to memorizing book contents, that is useless.

  8. The tests are biased against folks / students who are not elite. It would not be right to bring them into an institution where they would bring up the rear of the class.

  9. The enrollment stats demonstrate there’s a bias in the testing results. When there is one group out performing others, the test is skewed in that group’s favor. The numbers don’t lie. Just say !

  10. Such victims 😂
How many blacks were shot by other blacks in just this year alone ?

  11. Yes, "academic preparation! YES! But, dancing and singing is much more fun than learning math or science… I remember being a college student in the 1970's; Asian kids were coming to the US, many 6-10 years young, not speaking a single word of English upon arrival, had little to no money, taking ESL classes in the poorest of urban schools, and graduating high school as valedictorian, going on to Harvard University. My college had about 60% White, 38% Black, and 2% Asian students; if you went into the library at any given time, at least 50% of the occupants were Asian… It's more about values and much less about racism…

  12. It's not a subject-test based on the curriculum, it's modeled on the SAT, and tests very specific skills. You absolutely have to practice, and you really can't go in cold, even if you're a strong student.

We've known for decades that test-prep is important – that's why Kaplan, Princeton Review, Khan Academy, etc make so much money. The fact that some kids get years of prep, and school support, while others do not, is inherently discriminatory.

Either we have to make free test-prep universally accessible, from 5th/6th grade, at least, or they need to go back to a holistic application – what the Specialized Schools did for decades before the test started in the 70s.

  13. Black and Latinos don’t value education as much as Asians, it’s as simple as that!

  14. It has to do with a lot of discipline. Asian culture is very disciplined when it comes to academia. It’s admirable, although probably exhausting. Parents need to be better at making sure their children keep their priorities straight. As a college professor, students who put their academia first and don’t make excuses make it very far

  15. So that Asian guy is extremely arrogant about Asian cultures, implying that the rest of us do not value education as much and therefore, should not get the same opportunities as them. He is looking out for his people and it is blatantly obvious. He comes off as condescending and elitist. It should be more than one test. A combination of factors need to be considered. And the K-8th education needs to prepare all students for this opportunity.

  16. Yes, math is biased against black and Latino kids. Math is racist so do English.

  17. But black students excel in certain sports and rap music. It's all about effort and passion.

  18. Asian kids study much harder than blacks and Latinos. Pretty simple. Do what Asians do before you complain.

  19. This is easy. He just said it in the video. STUDENTS WHO SCORE THE HIGHEST, GET ADMITTED. Blacks just want it all to be about them. Makes me sick.

  20. School education in USA is really poor. Elementary to middle not much at all by High school kids are not prepared for what’s to come. Because of which many drop out and go for vocational courses. If someone wants to pass these tests they need to bring this awareness much early to students and parents. Have a way to prepare and then attend. You just can’t fight these tests. If it was not for these difficult test they wouldn’t be elite and students would not be selected accordingly. Not everyone is great and this should be accepted. Consolation prize concept should be removed.

  21. So you didn't pass and use 'divercity reason – so they HAVE to let you in??? Test is a test – it doesn't measure your race, gender – just brains. Shame on you!

  22. Affirmative action in action?
    😂

  23. So?..… I went to a specialized high school…. being of color has nothing to do with it has to do with your level of expertise and a specific subjects…. ☝️😎 if that's the case, would it be racist to say that mostly Asians attend Stuyvesant anyway? Give me a break 😢

  24. I went to a high school and university where the majority was Asian. The standards were real high. However, when I joined the workforce, it was no longer Asian. I noticed a change in culture and work ethic and I enjoyed the laid back nature more.

  25. I'm ok with the test. But also passing the skills test for using chopsticks, now that is going too far!!

  26. We need private schools staffed with committed, effective staff for Black and LatinX children. The staff will need massive support. It will be challenging to overcome the obstacles created by popular culture and poverty, but it can be done. It will require a massive and unrelenting political and economic battle with very powerful interests. Low expectations are killing our children. Tests , and all of their trappings, are almost always biased, especially with preparatory disparities. But we will have to somehow convince parents and politicians that this is of paramount importance. Do not be drawn into an ill advised conflict with Asians. There is nothing to be gained by succumbing to the old “divide-and-conquer” strategy. Many won’t understand and will insist that they are looking out for their own, as if they were somehow a separate entity. Fighting over crumbs thrown on the floor. We can create institutions that will nurture and inspire our children to achieve. Let’s do that.

  27. Let's take race out it for a moment and ask….why can't ALL kids receive the same, quality education…if we're all paying taxes towards these schools? I don't want my tax dollars funding private education or specialized schools. It seems to me specialized high school only furthers the gap between who gets a good education and who does not. For liberals who claims they want an "equal' playing field, they ensure to keep the structures that perpetuate inequality in place.

  28. one single test lets you KNOW ,if you are competent or NOT !!!! as simple as that..

  29. I teach in a high end magnet high school like the ones discussed here but in a different state. Similarly students have an aptitude test to determine who gets in. In our state we have so many slots allocated to teach school district. This means we get kids from the rougher feeder schools and kids from the higher end districts.

My kids from a rough district did not have a math teacher for 7th or 8th grade. That being said they were practically in tears to meet me and realize they have a real life honest to god teacher. They are also my hardest working students because they don't want to go back to their home division.

The right solution is to use the test but take the top students from each school allocated by slots. Slots should be proportional to school population. This way you take the top % of students proportionally equal from all feeder schools. It's a good system.

  30. Them Asians be cheating. A group of them would go in and remember a certain amount of the test and they then get together and put the test back together outside with the answers .. the key is not to score 100% because it raises red flags

  31. Schools are only as good as the students.

  32. Stop voting for anti school choice democrats that care only to protect their teachers' union ATM.

  33. I am going to check my income against the median income in America, if it is lower than median income it is not fair.

  34. There should not be job interviews because how can a few minutes of interviews tell how good you are. We should ban job interviews. It is how racism comes in.

  35. It is unfair that people who work harder get more money. It is racism.

  36. I heard from a volunteer with NYC Public Schools that it's a racist place to work. The employees push stereotypes about black students and only care about collecting a paycheck. They did not mention the alleged lead in the drinking water in the black and Hispanic schools or the Teach for America programs that place ignorant, inexperienced people in those schools. Let alone the anti-American beliefs towards the black American students.

  37. Keep playing the race card and see where it gets you.

  38. Too much emphasis on testing when the priority should be on learning.

  39. Parents who are involved with their children’s studies do better!

  40. If you can’t make the grades you don’t deserve to be enrolled

  41. You get out what you put in regardless of racial make up. Schools have all sorts of problems wherever you go.

  42. All take Change it or be quiet

  43. Offer it to the kids that do the best on the test seems like a great idea. I’m white im not mad there is way more Asians that got in than whites. Congratulations Asian on having a good family culture that promotes education excellence in your homes. White people of New York why don’t you strive harder to educate your kids so they can perform better on this test so your kids get the opportunity to go to this school.
