There are far to many students that don't take their future seriously. A lot reason these students are not able to pay off their debt, is they don't research their careers and take something really useful to society that is in demand. Literally hundreds of thousands come out of college with useless degrees that will not pay the college bills, more or less make a decent living. Follow the money. What careers are in demand and what do they pay? So we are suppose to hold the rest of society hostage to pay those bills. What about all the people that did not go to college. Why should they pay the bills of a ill prepared college student. I think not. I was a college career counselor for ten years. It was ridicules what careers people sought with no demand, or they would be lucky if they got one of ten jobs in the country against 10,000 graduates with the same degree. My daughter, unfortunately was one of them. She went to School at the New York Fashion institute because she was reading fashion magazines in high school. She was not sure what she wanted to do in fashion, she just had a fantasy of being in fashion. So she graduated in a class studying the same thing of 2400 students in the same year. That added to thousands more from other schools across the country doing the same thing. That year I looked up how many jobs were available across the country in fashion. I found about 10 that month. It turns out there were a few successes with students getting into direct fashion, but what I heard the most is that many ended up in clothing stores as a department manager, or supervisor, like Walmart, Macy's, and others. These positions do not make a lot of money either. From what I have seen, you don't need a college degree to work in those departments. You can easily work your way up in a couple of years without all the college debt. So my daughter ended up working for a famous book publisher and is an account manager. She barely makes enough to survive in Brooklyn, New York. There just is not very good guidance for our students in evaluating a career choice. Our schools do a very poor job of teaching students how to pick a career that WILL pay for college, and a family, if they so desire. For many college is just one more big party, until they learn they picked the wrong career and have to pay the bills.

I paid an arm and a leg for my college education, LITERALLY while serving in the United States military. Thank you GI Bill. I dont see why i should have to pay another arm and leg, metaphorically, for someone elses student loans. If you signed on the dotted line and made a commitment, KEEP IT. I did.
