NATO accepting membership applications from Sweden and Finland is NATO's stubborn disregard of guarantees that former US Secretary of State James Baker had given to former Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990 and former Pres. Clinton had given to the late Russian president Boris Yeltsin in 1993 that "NATO would not expand eastwards". Such a move would be "unacceptable to Russia" according to Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin and now Vladimir Putin. It might mean making (Nuclear) World War III a clearer possibility.
