Speaking to military members, first responders and their families at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, President Joe Biden pointed to the sense of national unity that sprung forth in the days immediately after the 9/11 attacks and said it’s more important than ever that Americans come together around the principle of democracy.
But the post-9/11 unity faded amid questions about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which dragged on for years. Today, Americans remain deeply distrustful of and dissatisfied with their government, a piece of the political landscape that gained traction in part because of the Iraq war and the false premises on which it was launched.
