Is there a problem with teaching everything about slavery? Because that’s all this law is requiring. There were horrible slave owners… black and white slave owners. There were good slave owners who educated slaves and helped them learn a trade and become free men and women. It’s was a horrible time for some slaves and it was the same as going to your job for others. Teach it all, not just the bad stuff.

Most poor and working class white people did not like the idea of the slaves set free and becoming citizens. They saw them as unwanted competition for employment and education opportunities that belong to them exclusively. That's why they were in favor of segregation and discrimination against black people. Any skills ex slaves attained did not include reading or writing, the better for lower class whites to hog those opportunities. Black people were made inferior by these conditions. They were given scraps and left overs after whites had their fill. Many were exploited sharecroppers a slight step up from slavery. The post traumatic syndrome from their lot as chattle slaves was never addressed and the transistion was tortuous at best. They dealt with it the best way they could. Prayer and faith.
