Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Soviet Union, has died at the age of 91, according to Russian news agencies. Gorbachev was credited as an important figure in starting a series of events that marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. NBC News’ Keir Simmons reports.

Man, this news REALLY hit me! I was born in 1981 and raised in The Bronx, New York. One of my earliest memories was hearing 2 names in the adult world, Reagan and Gorbachev. The Cold War paranoia was very much en vouge throughout the mid to late 80's. My public school even did air raid drills like my parent's generation. I recall the windows were covered by these heavy, greenish-grey pull down curtains from the 40's that let zero light into the rooms. Our teachers, trying their best not to show fear, would tell us students to sit in the hallways, away from any windows. These drills seemed normal to this 80's elementary school kid. Now knowing that this leader helped to ensure my sister and 2 brothers wouldn't grow up in that type of world does my heart good. Dosvedanya, comrade.

A truly great man. He didn't need to sit at a ridiculous long table or to ride around topless on a horse believing it would impress people; he gave freedom to millions of people who had lived imprisoned by their leaders who could only defend their political idealism by building walls and using barbed wire.
By the way, I will never understand why we in the West think that his name is pronounced "Gorbachev". It is pronounced "Gorbachov", The "ё" at the end of his name has nothing to do with an "e" in the Latin alphabet – it is a cyrillic letter which is pronounced something like "yor", i.e. "Gorbach<yor>v".
Russia didn't deserve Gorbatchov. He gave the World a feeling of peace and hope for the future. And look at Russia now. What a disaster. It's time for opening all borders and " come together and get rid of wars and fighting for land or precious for personal abuse.
