This is very risky, especially for adolescents, whom are in a critical period of development. Adolescents have an even higher risk than other age groups of developing depressive symptoms and lasting depression in adult life when on hormonal contraceptives.
The pill affects the brain, stress response and the immune response. For example, it increases c-reactive protein and cortisol, producing a blunted-stress response and increased inflammation which is linked to depression. The pill also suppresses serotonin and GABA levels in the brain.
Over 20 MRI studies have shown that hormonal contraceptives use is associated with localised decreases
in the cortical thickness in different brain areas responsible for emotional processing, stimulus-reward associations, sex drive, weight control, focus, attention, autobiographical memory, future planning, etc to name just a few. These areas are:lateral orbitofrontal cortex, the posterior cingulate cortex and the hypothalamus (the lymbic system).
Shrinkage in hypothalamus is associated with overactive pituitary, increased anger and strongly correlated with depressive symptoms.
