Buffalo shooting victims’ families sue social media companies

Family members of the 10 people that were killed in a mass shooting at a Buffalo, N.Y., grocery store in 2022 have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against six social media companies. The families allege the platforms provided an online space to promote violence while maximizing their ad revenue. NBC’s Danny Cevallos reports.

  1. Hate and fear rules the day on social media.

  2. Is twitch involved? They need to be… it was live-streamed… the shooter used their platform to broadcast his assassinations… he murdered Black people due to his hatred and live streamed for people to watch… and they did

  3. War against free speech. This man chose to do what he did.

  4. Stop killing black people you racist pos.

  5. Best of luck to them in their lawsuit. Anyone who has spent even just a little bit of time on social media, and including here on YouTube, can tell you that when you engage in any way with a particular kind of content it starts pushing more like that at you. Which is perfectly fine if you wrote a positive comment on a kitten video but terrible if you posted your disgust for white supremacists or some similar extremists content.

  6. you were already before you came here, the other part, you enjoy. so go along how you do, wonder how long until someone else than your thingy will care, and just nuke you off the face of the planet.

  7. Pretty low move because there are billions of people who are using those platforms and not all of them are radicalized.

  8. Algorithm is the program designed to pickup and dump certain content to specific site, like click bait. Human brain is extremely susceptible to suggestions. That is the reason why businesses spend millions of dollars on marketing from the food you to the clothes you wear: bottle waters, brand names clothings, vehicles, political parties, people and whatever else.

  9. I’m suddenly no longer upset at that shooting. These feral savages were always going to rob us.

  10. My portfolio has good companies, however it has been stalling this year. I have approximately $600k stagnant in my reserve that needs growth.

  11. As a Republican and proud NRA member, I think that these FRIVOLOUS LAWSUITS should be stopped, just like the one President Trump recently avoided. This Second Amendment HERO merely exercised his Constitutional rights and should not face jail time, let alone these PATRIOTIC AMERICAN corporations. What's next, suing the GUN MANUFACTURERS for making lethal products?
The choice is clear – Keeping the Constitution and allowing people to carry deadly weapons everywhere, or letting people 'feel safe' when they go to grocery stores and schools.

  12. Sue them because they do hold liability

  13. Government Funded Media and Marxist Dems Projecting their Extremism That Killed 10 people

  14. Aotearoa, New Zealand and Aotearoa New Zealand are all official names for my country.

Kia Ora (Be well) is our official greeting. Our anthem is sung in Māori and English. NZ currency has Māori and Pākehā shown on the notes.

Even once apartheid South Africa, has now been ruled by dark brown for 39 years and has an anthem containing several local languages.

The US has No official indigenous greeting, The Land of the Brave on Reservations and not shown on currency. Why does America refuse to grow up?

  15. You can't be "radicalized by algorithms". You can be a person that comes across "extremist" content and ignores it or you can be a person who comes across it and jumps in feet first. It's the person. Not the guns. Not the platform. The person. But individuals don't have any much money as companies, so obviously these money grabs are going to keep happening.

  16. There should be liability in this instance. Interested in seeing the result of this one.

  17. He was a self-proclaimed white supremacist. Sue his parents.

  18. Normally I wouldn’t agree with this but now that im looking at discord…..

  19. Sue the KKK. Wasn’t he one of those sheet wearing clowns? 🤣

  20. Social media algorithms are essentially a way to brainwash the public for profit.

  21. Personal accountability went extinct somewhere in the 90s i think 🤔

  22. Clowns should sue their own race for the slaughtering of their own people. You all are still mad at 1 white kid killing 10 of you but since then several thousand have been massacred by your own. But let's keep trying to blame every else for every little thing that happens

  23. Not a design defect, it’s very purposeful.

  24. I don’t think social media caused the victims deaths

  25. Only black people and democrats come up with this dumb bs…

  26. I could see maybe this argument at least kinda making sense against sites like facebook, twitter, youtube or something like that but I really fail to see how discord and amazon make any sense whatsoever. Also, this is in general pretty silly from a technical pov. These sites are basically using the same, or similar, algo that netflix uses to recommend movies. There are some differences and I'm sure the big players all have their own hand-rolled solution but the basic underlying concepts are the same. It simply looks at what a person has viewed and then makes recommendations based on what others who viewed other similar content also viewed that the user has not yet seen. There isn't any room in that for some magic manipulator or whatever

  27. They are not Suing for $$$! They are Suing social media to get them to Censor Racism! 🤢

  28. but not the gun companies.. nice

  29. Maybe sue the sidewalks too

  30. It's sad, they don't care about the victims, just money…literally the BLM mentality 🙁

  31. LOL theyre just fishing for free money. They dont deserve a PENNY. I hope they get counter sued into oblivion

  32. Wait how does discord do this?

  33. How about just sue everyone in society for existing?

  34. The parents aren't wrong. But they aren't going to win the lawsuit.

  35. Interesting suit as algorithms are designed to keep feeding the user similar content so anyone prone to be manipulated/influenced can fall prey ……

  36. good luck on that
    rip victims

  37. Haha, Amazon doesnt even have a social media. This lawsuit is just an attempted money grab

  38. Social media is as evil as it gets.

  39. Now sue nets outlets for reporting the news.

  40. Social media and ai is our new god
