The McKinney Fire burning in California near the Oregon border has forced firefighters to fall back into defensive positions to protect homes and property while forecasters fear another massive heat wave may be forming. The fire exploded in size over the weekend, from 1 mile to 62 square miles in just 24 hours. While the West is experiencing more fires flaring up, erratic weather threatens to bring dry thunderstorms with dangerous lighting but little to no rain.

Does the pacific northwest just not believe in fire breaks? Large swaths of area at least 100 yard across where all plant life is purposely killed to slow these fires from spreading?
How about some desalinization plants pumping water into these areas that are under perpetual drought? The western half of the country is already screwed as far as having enough water, so they should be having desalinization plants anyways.
The true problem here is a combination of drought and winds. The drought is easy to fix, though admittedly expensive. But no more expensive than an oil pipeline the government usually foots the bill for anyways. A handful of desalinization plants on the cost pumping fresh water up to specific mountain peaks then letting the water run naturally can fix the majority of the drought issue. But I guess we'd rather have the loss of life, loss of home, loss of capital, and loss of insurance companies instead of being smart for once.
