China is defending its latest act of aggression at sea after one of its warships came within 450 feet of an American Navy destroyer in the Taiwan Strait. The Chinese defense minister said the recent joint United States and Canadian patrols in the region served as a “provocation.” NBC News’ Monica Alba reports.

America has too many financial fingers in China’s money pie to have the clout to act as it should in situations like this today. The actions of doing nothing about this China ship coming within 150 yards of US destroyer, apart from mealy just not been happy about it is testimony to how weak the US has become.
China clearly sees fit to display its assertiveness and often at that and a matching opposition, would do the same. However in the name of US companies manufacturing in China to make profits, China shows who’s holding all of the strings.
First, International Maritime Law states clearly that the larger vessel (the US Destroyer) has the right of way. This is commonly known as Law of Tonnage. The reason for this is that the larger ship will have more momentum, therefor needing more time to slow down. You can see the same thing in comparing a sedan to a semi. The semi CANNOT stop the same way the sedan can.
Under that same Law, the ship cutting across the bigger vessel is WHOLLY responsible for any damage incurred. It doesn't matter whether it is territorial waters or the open sea.
Second, an 8,200 ton ship needs a minimum of a quarter mile to come to rest from 15 knots. Cutting across the path at 150 yards is effectively less than a ship length ahead of the US Destroyer. That would be equivalent to cutting someone off on the highway with 5 feet of distance.
Under no circumstances could this be considered professional ship handling. It may have been following orders to a T, but a US Captain that pulled a maneuver like that would most likely be Relieved for Hazarding Their Command, and would lose the trust and support of his crew for unnecessarily risking their lives.
