In a surprising move, the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill that would make daylight savings time permanent around the country, meaning Americans would no longer need to change their clocks twice a year. Former Director of the Time Services Department for the U.S. Naval Observatory, Dr. Demetrios Matsakis, joins News NOW to explain why we have daylight savings time in the first place and why some people might not want to make the change.

This is a very bad idea. The extra sunlight will fade my curtains!
btw if this passes it goes into effect 2024/2025 year which sucks
Technically, this is not "making dayiight savings time permanent"; it is simply stopping the ridiculous fiddle of changing the labels attached. "Time" remains the same, arbitrarily affixed numbers. Just change the start time to suit conditions. Our ancestors had NO difficulty being reasonable.
what this really would be is a change of TIME ZONES. not DST which apparently people believe.
This will just be another disaster that happens under Biden’s watch. Anything that he touches turns to crap.
It should be STANDARD time that is made permanent. Picking the worst possible option!
Putting us out in the dark so night people can party? Sounds normal. They take up a lot of everything. Why not the rest?
Just another example of how messed up our government and democracy is. Does this need to be decided now no. Can this be put on the ballot the next time we have an election so the people can decide yes. Why does every single decision in a democracy need to be decided by lawmakers. The whole point of a democracy is the people govern either by lawmakers or the people.
.. NBC NEWS? 👨💼 thank! you! for sharing! reliable Intel information! 🖥 regarding and pertaining to: "could daylight saving time actually become permanent!"… this is incredible the director !of the time Services Department! of the US Naval Observatory Dr Demetrios! Explained! why we have daylight savings! 🕛 it's hilarious! and funny! 😂 I was under the belief that daylight savings was implemented Nationwide twice a year to counterbalance! the months! 📆 out of the year! 🗓 turns out it was due to some guy named George Hudson in 1918!.. that came up with the idea! because, he needed more TIME TO PLAY!! 😆 ..LOL!! 😂
Grandparents nationwide will no longer have to call family members to adjust their computers, wall clocks, alarm clocks….
A unanimous vote comes as no surprise since most of the Senate seems to prefer doing their deeds in the dark.
Except for Marginal Greene. She thinks "controlling clocks" is a "conspiracy". Maybe she should call the 'GAZPACHO POLICE' ??
I bet they could get to the bottom of this mind-blowing issue in a timely fashion!
Finally!!!
Jimmie Carter tried to make Day Light Savings Time permanent. It was a dismal failure because during the winter it's too dark in the early morning. Kids walking to the bus stop kept getting hit by vehicles. If anything, we should just keep the clock as is because it's safer.
I sure hope so.
I've been wishing for time changes to stop for years. And I do prefer it to be extra daylight in the evening. I can do more yard work after I go home from my job.
There are huge arguments on either side so it surprises me that none of our elected geniuses could just say "Cut it down the middle by a half hour and then make it permanent". Win-win for everyone. Your kid has less chance to get run over walking to school in the dark morning and people can cut off their A/C off earlier in the day.
DST is moronic, it's almost like Standard time is called Standard for a reason, it's the default. This isn't hard to understand. I get 300 days of sun in my state, I HATE the sun.
Arizonans be like… Don't know what they are talking about…🌵
I feel like this is a business decision to get you to work an hour more. Heavens forbid you get to go home early though.
It be better if they just stick to standard time.
Why not just put more LED lights on school busses? Makes things much more visible.
I remember going to school in the dark when we tried this the last time. I can't see where it matters, ok so it's dark when I go to school it wasn't any big deal and today there are no where near as many children that walk to school parents don't allow it like in 1974. So I don't see any problem with just keeping the same time…Ask Jimmy Carter he did it and he's 97 years old, I would like to know what he thinks.
Love this idea , I hate spring forward fall back
Please…No! Prefer standard time. Why do we have to F with absolutely everything?
Just imagine if both parties agreed on more than one thing…
I support the Sunshine Protection act! I live in NYC and it is depressing to have the sun go down at 4 PM in the winter.
i lived in Korea for a year and let me tell you, going the whole year without changing the clocks and disrupting my sleep schedule was magical.
You guys finally agreed on something good but all sleep experts agree standard time is better than daylight saving time. How did you guys screw this up?!
From Wikipedia, the history of DST in the US: In the United States, the concept that DST was implemented for the benefit of farmers is a common myth.[38][39][40] In reality, farmers have been one of the strongest lobbying groups against DST since it was first implemented.[38][39][40] The factors that influence farming schedules, such as morning dew and dairy cattle's readiness to be milked, are ultimately dictated by the sun, so the time change introduces unnecessary challenges.[38][40][41] DST was first implemented in the US as a wartime measure in 1918 for seven months during World War I in the interest of adding more daylight hours to save energy.[42][41] This was not long after DST was implemented in Germany and the United Kingdom.[43][44] The measure was supported by retailing and manufacturing interests,[44] but opposed by railroad[44] and agriculture groups.[40] Year-round DST (or "War Time") was implemented again in 1942 for three years during World War II for similar reasons.[45] After the war, local jurisdictions were free to choose if and when to observe DST until the Uniform Time Act which standardized DST in 1966.
I'd prefer Standard time, but what I've been advocating for just splitting the difference. Change it halfway between. 30 minute change!
These jackasses in Congress actually agreed on something. How about term limits. How about campaign finance reform. I think not.
There is NO compromise … WTF is he talking about. Changing times 2x/year is outdated, antiquated and maddening.
SADLY … this will not take effect until Nov 2023 ???? WTAF are we waiting for ?
Time is winding down
its not necessary. many other countries don't change the clocks.
it adds complexity to your life
