Kroger, one of the nation’s largest supermarket chains, just converted one of its stores to only offer self-checkout, and other retailers are also experimenting with self-checkout machines. NBC News’ George Solis has more on the growing trend and what customers are saying.

  1. Self-checkout was a headache for me when I didn't understand not to lean to far over the scanner, and when products like fruits have an item number that needs to be entered and weighed. Plus there are buttons for items from the deli and bakery. So you have to select those if you bought anything from those areas. But these days I'm in and out of self-checkout with no problems. Like I'm an experienced, professional cashier. It's really convenient.

  2. Old people hate technology. What else is new?

  3. Wait till thief goes up! 😂

  4. Ita a lot easier to steal something too plus you have a good reason if you get caught like I forgot to scan it

  5. They don’t want to pay cashiers, plain and simple

  6. I love sams club I get to walk around and scan my items while I'm shopping when I'm done hit the pay now and I'm gone no need to stand in line waiting to pay looking like a goofy 😂😂😂

  7. As a former grocery person it shouldn’t matter to you unless your close to a nursing home

  8. We've had self-checkout for years here in California. I like it much better. 😂 People are lazy!!

  9. in San Francisco, they removed all self checkouts… b/c of widespread theft…. so 🤷‍♀

  10. I will not be checking myself out. I will go elsewhere.

  11. Hard to believe people are divided on an issue

  12. Sweet! Free groceries!😂🖕

  13. So do we get paid for working there 😂

  14. Hate it smiths you are terrible

  15. So I have to do a job that I don't get paid for? To the people who think its okay I hope yall lose yall jobs to a robot. 😂

  16. I call them "Self NoPay" because so many bgs not scanning their items and just stealing them.

  17. I don't mind using self-checkout, …when it works smoothly, as I can often check out faster, and I don't mind a little extra work.
But the self check-out systems are, in practice, often overly-sensitive to the point of glitchiness, due,… I assume, to theft prevention measures.
When you end up requiring employee assistance, sometimes multiple times during a transaction, is it really self-checkout?

  18. The self-checkouts I'm used to lets you look up fruit and stuff (bananas are always on the first screen) and you just place the item on the scanner to weigh it. Summoning employee help for every fruit/vegetable purchase is just stupid.

  19. Wake me up when there is self surgery.

  20. Checkout is a hassle and a time waster at any level – full checkout / self checkout do like a lot of folks do load up your carts bring an old receipt to wave at the exit person and roll on out helps to dress nicely and be courteous – checkout is for suckers

  21. My wife and I are definitely not young and can say we have grey hairs, I think these self-check-out are god sent, I can't remember not using ones. Our kids loved taking turns who gets to help us scan and bag the groceries when they were little, they are now old enough to drive and do their own grocery shopping. I hate standing in line waiting for price checks, coupon booklet users, people writing checks, slow check-out people, chatty check-out people, liquor age checks, and whatever delay. I just want to get going with my day.

  22. I love it, but if I have to basically work there and check myself out I should get a grocery discount

  23. My only problem with self check out is sometimes people don't know how to use it or they get stuck and it makes the line longer..than regular checkout…

  24. I love self checkout .. cheaper produce 😜

  25. I stop going to Kroger because my store was all self check out. So I checked out! Haven’t been back in years. Self checkout can be so slow!

  26. This is another example of cheesy America, a once great nation quickly turning into a McDonald's drive thru, once rich in culture now tacky and so dumbed down…!!!

  27. Can't be that difficult we had this already 10 years ago and now it is running very well.
It makes still more sense if you only do not that much and hvae just few items.

  28. I like both options. They shouldn't go "all" in

  29. Ha.. outside the USA in the UK and Europe we've had them for years! Hardly anyone uses cash anymore.

  30. First they don't pay people liveable wages, then they wonder why nobody is applying for their jobs, then they replace those jobs that people desperately need with robots.

  31. Preparation for the beast system according to revelation. Even so, come LORD JESUS.

  32. It’s not as if using self checkout will save the customers money. This has more to with corporate greed more than technology.

  33. JOB KILLERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. I have no problem with them, but have heard of customers being harassed by loss prevention at the door more.

  35. What did you expect when you have to pay cashiers upwards of $20/hour, and expenses keep going up? Thr cost savings have to come from somewhere.

  36. It's hard when your handicapped

  37. I think one of the best solutions would be imposing a surcharge on people that don’t meet an item or order total minimum.

  38. We have a Fred Meyers trying to force these on customers. Well, I'm shopping at a store 5 miles away just to get better service. Btw, they also are forcing customers to find carts in parking lot now. So, why don't they pass along the savings from their not having employees? GREED.

  39. Nobody wants to do a 9 to 5 anyway so what’s the problem

  40. This is literally just free labor 🤷🏾‍♀️ and another reason to not pay cashiers a liveable wage. here in NC alot of stores have actually been over charging shoppers since 2020 on numerous items at checkout and yes they still get fines for it till this day: Walmart, Target, Family Dollar, Dollar General, and Food Lion

  41. Anyone else feel like they could’ve watched this same segment 10-15 years ago? (Except for some store having no human cashiers at all now.)

  42. Yay less and less starting jobs for younger people.

  43. This is the end of customer service. Its a way of companies turning their back on customers.

  44. You can be mad at Latino people for taking jobs but you better be looking at TECHNOLOGY!

  45. The Machines are taking Jobs away from People !

  46. Mixed feelings about them. If I have a few quick items, I like them as long as I don’t have produce as he pointed out in the story. But overall I like someone helping me and greeting me. I want people to stay employed and to have a more personal experience when shopping. The other issue is that those savings aren’t being passed to customers.
