New York is wonderful in the summer. I loved swimming at the beaches from Coney Island to Montauk Point, all along the North Shore, South Shore, and everywhere in between.
This time of year even if the water is still a little chilly, in this heat it's usually possible to swim for an hour or more at a time with a few minutes out on the beach to warm up, almost to uncomfortable, Then right back into the water.
